Sony really likes their new 83” OLED

Sony’s new flagship OLED TV model is the A90J. Looks like an incredible TV but is not even 8K. For the new 83”, they want $7,999.99. Ok, let’s just say $8K. Plus tax. Ridiculous, that price will not hold through the summer.
For the same price, right now, you can buy both a Sony 77” A80J OLED for $3500 and a Sony A90J OLED in 65” also for $3500 for a total of $7K and pay your taxes before hitting $8K.
Better yet, you could buy either one of the above new OLED TVs plus an 85” X950H LED from 2020 for $3700 and still be under $8K.
And best yet, you could buy the soon-to-be released Sony X95J 85” LED for $4500 plus one of the aforementioned TVs and still be at the 83” A90J price.
If the 83” inch A90J was an 8K or some super burn-in proof OLED TV then Sony “might” be able to justify that price tag.
Not sure what their marketing plan is for the A90J. I am a big Sony advocate and love their products but this one escapes me.
Keep in mind, OLED is not the future of TVs — that belongs to mini-LED and other tiny pixel formats.

Pretty much all manufacturers have silly prices on their flagship TVs.

I’m looking really hard at the upcoming X95J LED in 85”. Best Buy says it will debut in the next two weeks at $4500. Still expensive but sounds reasonable.
It is said the new Sony XR processor might be a game-changer for LED TV. Might be a reason they are pushing the OLEDs early on. They know the X95J at that price point will be a killer.

Maybe I’m missing something but I’m perfectly content with my 65” Vizo that’s a couple years old.

Vizio makes damn solid TVs.

quote:Truth! I've got two that I bought over 10 years ago. One hung on my bedroom wall till I put up a thinner one a couple of years ago. It got repurposed and has been hanging outside for the last couple of years. Still going strong. Rarely covered and used quite a bit. 1080p is the highest resolution, but the picture has always been damn good.

This is kind of an interesting size to me, b/c I have an 83" screen in my office/library room. But it's a projection setup with an LG LED projector, and a retractable screen. It ran under $1200 total, 6 years ago. It's not 4K but I don't really feel a strong urge to upgrade this setup to 4K. (My main system is 4K LG OLED and a 4K "capable" JVC projector.)
And if I don't want the 83" screen on the wall, I can just roll it up. At that size, the picture is brighter than on a larger screen so it's better about holding up with some light in the room, though I mostly watch sports and so on which have bright content, not a lot of dark scenes like movies tend to have.
Projection setups are underrated. There are a lot of ultra short throw projectors out now which are very bright, made for living rooms and don't have to be used in a completely dark room.

you probably mean microLED, which is still years away.
Flagship TV is expensive from every manufacturer... Sony currently has the top OLED in high demand.
These things are priced that high, because the people that buy them dont care about the price.

For anyone wondering.
Mini-LED is a backlight, just an extension of LCD. LED TVs have always been misnamed because the LED is only used as a backlight to an LCD panel (instead of the older fluorescent type backlight). Mini-LED uses smaller LEDs to more evenly light the panel; uneven lighting from LEDs is a problem in a lot of current LCD/LED TVs.
MicroLED is a completely different technology which will be "true" LED TV because the LEDs will be the actual pixels. This is a very expensive tech right now but does look like it'll take over from OLED at some point as the ultimate TV for picture quality - with no burn-in worries.

Any idea when the X95J will be released? I'm in the market for a 65" and was leaning towards the X90J over the A90J or A80J. Because I'm sure the wife will put iHeart radio playing on the tv all day and I'll end up with their logo burned into my TV.

Exactly, my wife leaves the TV on most of the day on static music channels which can lend to burn-in. Also, the sports and news channels’ crawls can burn a slight haze across the bottom.
I have been rocking a 65” Panasonic Plasma VT50 for 9 years and it still has a great picture with only some minor burn-in across the bottom. I was careful during break in period.
Don’t want to deal with that again with OLED.
Thus the Sony X95J is my best bet. I’ve viewed OLED and high end LCD/LED TVs side by side and I can see the blacker blacks of the OLED. But apart from one another, I can’t tell much difference for general viewing.
The X95J series is supposed to drop by mid-June.

Thanks for the info. I searched other sites and some were saying august. I may just hold out for the X95J if it's going to be this month.

Love the TV... hate the GUI.
Get Amazon Cube, Apple TV or ROKU to go with it.

Hope the Best Buy guy is right. Hate to push it back two more months. But Sony might do that to push OLED sales.

Well I think my cabinet guy fricked me. We just moved into our new house and I just measured the opening of the built in and he only made the opening 56” between the face trim. Most of the 65’s are 57+“. The sad thing is he brain fricked the cabinet measurements on my patio for a 55” to make sure it would fit.

Correct. They do this, because they know rich folk who like to show off their tech to people will buy them up upon release. It helps them makeup their development costs and invest in more units which will lead to lower prices. This has been going on for decades.
