Speaking of projectors... JVC introduced a great new 4K lineup a few months ago with new lower price points for laser (still started at $11K though), and now the other shoe has dropped with Sony introducing their new 4K lineup - which include a laser powered model, VPL-XW5000ES, at $6K. Projector Central has a preview up and overall it's pretty exciting stuff, though a few things might be missing like HDMI 2.1 (no 4K / 120Hz) and HDR10+ support.

I recall going to a demo when Sony rolled out their first laser powered 4K projector - it was a whopping $60K. Absolutely stunning picture but obviously not remotely in the budget for the vast majority of folks. I cracked to the Sony rep to let me know when I could get one for under $10K. While it's not quite the "light cannon" of that projector (5000 rated lumens vs 2000), for $6K it's plenty for most in that range.

I've had an LG 4k laser projector for about a year now. It has been excellent.

I don't think there is a dolby vision projector yet, at least not readily available.

The only projector I've seen released as DV compatible is a China only model from Xiaomi.

That's a VERY good question. These do have new .61" panels so it's at least a possibility.

I've had a JVC for 5+ years so I haven't followed that specific Sony issue much, aside from generally seeing that it seemed to have been improved but probably not entirely eliminated. There doesn't seem to be nearly as much discussion about it as years ago and certainly not as much as when it was a major, major issue on their SXRD rear projection TVs.

I don't know anything about projectors so forgive the amateur question

Do laser projectors fix/have potential to fix the washed out/dark room issue with projectors?

No. But these are LCOS, so Sony and JVC has a much better black level to help with this. People go out and buy an e-shift dlp, and not realize DLP projectors from 15 years ago had better black levels than they do today. They are cheap to make though, so people buy them.

The big thing lasers do to help the "washed out" look when you have ambient light on the screen, is provide higher brightness with less compromises than a bulb. For brighter programming like sports or animated movies it helps. For darker content it doesn't help quite as much b/c that black "floor" is as high as whatever light is on the screen.
