Part of the difference in this niche they cut out. Most people buy the speakers so no need for additional components

A chromecast is $35. Not really a selling point when Sonos speakers are very expensive.

Eta: for me at least.

So a chromecast is a wifi speaker ?

How does it sound ? Can you pair it with others to create a stereo pair ? Add a sub ? 5.1 ?

No it's not a WiFi speaker. You plug it into the back of your receiver. It works on WiFi though, not bluetooth.

It sounds great to me but again I'm no sound expert.

Yes you can create groups.

That's what I thought. Two different animals. Chromecast is just a dongle. SONOS is the audio system too. Except for the connect, it's just a pre amp.

But it seemed to me CAD already owned an audio system. That's why I asked why he's looking into investing in Sonos when he can pick up a $35 chromecast and get all of the same functionality.

Why do I want music playing and wasting electricity and bandwidth when I am not home?

Look man, we live in the amazon age. Buy it, try it and return it if for some reason you hate it. Nobody here can accurately describe how awesome sonos is without showing you in person. No matter what music setup you desire, it can be done with a Sonos.

For example:

I use mine to stream Amazon Music Unlimited and Apple Music. I also have a computer that is always on that it can pull music off of. My turntable is hooked up as a "line in" device. Any and all of these sources can work on any or all of my sonos speakers. I can listen to my turntable in the kitchen and bedroom, although it is hardwired in my den. I can listen to a custom playlist that combines all 3 digital music sources in the den and another room. The combinations are limitless.

Are all of their speakers shelf style? Nothing that goes in-wall or in-ceiling?

Are you paying for this service separately? Or does purchasing Sonos give you access to unlimited versions of these music services?

My Bose Sound Link Mini is currently connected to my iPhone to stream whatever's on my phone (including Apple Music) along with my Echo Dot to stream Amazon Music Unlimited, Amazon Music, and Tune In as well.

If I had multiple speakers I could stream these sources to each of them. How does Sonos differentiate other than being able to be connected to use as a stereo, multi speaker setup for TV use cases.

They sell the connect amp with powered 2 channels. You can hook it to your architectural speakers.

Two different things. The Bose Soundtouch line is their SONOS competitor.

Big proponent of Sonos. I'll add that I have my system set up with various alarms. So M-F my chosen station will start playing at 6 AM and go off at 8 AM, for listening to music while getting ready to leave for work. Then the music comes back on at 3PM and goes off when I turn it off for listening to music when we get home from school/work. During the weekend, I have it set to come on at 7:30 and play continuously. As previously mentioned, the music is being played from your network connection and not a device. If I leave the house, with my phone, the music keeps playing.

I know it sounds simple, but it's really nice to always be listening to music in the background. You don't ever have to think about pairing a device or choosing a playlist (unless you want something new). Sometimes we won't even turn on the TV in the evening (which is a great thing IMO).

Can't wait for the Alexa integration, so I can tell her to skip songs I don't want to hear.

Not sure, sounds similar. The only thing I can guess is that the sonos controller app is simply a controller. It is not streaming from a phone (although it could). My stuff is all up either in the "cloud" or on a computer. The contoller app is universal and operates in synchronicity to every other controller app from computer/ipad/windows/etc.

I am paying for both of them right now. Will be dropping Apple music once all my playlists are copied over.

No, Sonos does not give you free access to paid services.

There's the rub. I hate all streaming services. They have more and more rerecorded shite because artists don't want to put their original albums up so they are recording a special version just to post on these services. They also all play the shittiest tracks over and over and over because they have the best deals on certain songs and you'll hear repeats all day long no matter if it's Spotify or Google music.

YOU SHOULD NEVER HEAR A SONG MORE THAN ONCE WITH 20 MILLION TRACKS OR WHATEVER THEY CLAIM!!

You are FORCED to create a playlist to have any hope of hearing deep tracks or anything truly different.

I've about given up because you will never ever ever hear even a tiny fraction of that 10 million song library to truly discover new music because of shitty licensing agreements all streaming suffers from which keeps the same old shite bubbling up. You know I'm right. You know you're hearing the same old shite no matter what kind of artist radio you create.

I didn't realize how bad it truly was until I created a playlist based on a particular music category using my own collection. The difference was astounding. My tiny 30,000 song library played more and better stuff including songs I'd never heard right from my own goddsmn collection than I had heard in years of that same genre using the so-called unlimited streaming universe.

Didn't mean to go on a rant but Sonos needs to integrate very well with my personal music library and if I buy this system and ever ever ever hear even ONE commercial or told I'm "out of skips" then this system has failed. I'm not about to fork over hundreds or even a couple Grand to hear a car ad.

So how does this handle your personal media? Most of my music is synced to Google music online. I'm not looking to set up yet another music media server.

I hear you about no depth to the playlists.

However what really rubs me the wrong way is that there is an entire generation (or more) that has grown up listening to compressed music and that has no idea what it's missing in fidelity.

In certain cases other people (friends, family) may be at your house when you leave--i.e. Go on a beer run, etc
