Documents newly surfaced at the FCC indicate Sonos is preparing to launch a new smart speaker product for the home theater market. The smart speaker has the model number S14 and features an HDMI port, at least based on the FCC filing, instead of the optical output found on the maker’s other home theater products.

The filing was spotted by Variety, but unfortunately the FCC redacted a substantial amount of the info, making it hard to discern other details about the model. Sonos provided a generic statement on the matter, declining to provide any information about the speaker; though its model number is provided, no name is revealed at this time.

I just won a several year war with my wife to get the original playbar, and of course, it's now outdated

you can still sell it for $500+ in like 10 seconds.

they should have had an HDMI input years ago with all the new audio formats that require it.

Meh

I’m not touching it unless it has that ‘wireless power’ feature you were talking about in that other thread

I like my Playbar and don't see a need to upgrade. Also, that looks like their "new" Playbase picture. HDMI Input/Output is nice but, meh. My setup works just fine with an optical output.

yeah i'm fine with mine but you got a whole lotta 'but muh atmos' people on reddit freaking out about the lack of an hdmi port.

unti i buy a 120" 8K OLED w/ 100 versions of dolby sound i don't need anything but my existing playbar.

and HDMI port isn't going to help a Playbar with Atmos unless you plan on hanging a few from the ceiling.

ETA, the only thing that an HDMI port would help with is ensuring that you get some of the higher end audio formats to the playbar. Some TV's won't pass DTS or Dolby through the optical port.

ARC would be helpful too

It's what I have already with 4 in ceiling speakers connected to my Connect:AMP. It sounds pretty damn good already. Plus I have young kids under 5 so I don't need to knock my walls down or deafen my kids too young.

But I guess I'm just not the right use case/customer for this item. So that's cool, they're coming out with something new that may appeal to certain people - good for them.

No it isn't. And I question how you have this set up and the location of the speakers.

Apple TVs are a big issue since there is only HDMI audio out on the new ones.

And I'm not bashing Sonos or do I think everybody needs atmos.

This is great news. Means the price of old playbars will drop and I will finally snatch one up.

It's Dolby Digital, which is the best Sonos can do at the moment with their playbar and surrounds (whether it be 2x Play1s or with the Connect:AMP).

Is Sonos coming out with a new Playbar with HDMI and a remote? Seems... silly on the remote part.

I think what he was saying is the only home theater setup that Sonos offers right now is through the playbar/playbase and specifically connected rear channels/sub. a connect amp only has two channels, and Sonos only supports 5.1 (though the aforementioned setup) with 3 of those channels built within the playbar/playbase. 7.1 isn't supported and atmos definitely isnt supported.

In the new playbar? Hmmm, ugh. Still doesn't entice me as my 40$ Alexa puck sits right next to my playbar in the living room.

I wanna be the user that buys this but guess they're going for new consumers to the Sonos family?!
