I have a question about internet speeds. Lately my wife and kids have been complaining about slower speeds. We have the 400 Mbps package from spectrum. The picture below is a speed test as of this morning running on our google wifi steup. Spectrum came out Friday and tested right out of their router and it was showing over 400Mbps. The spectrum tech blamed our Ethernet switch and or our google home wifi for the slow speeds and recommended a different wifi setup.

So Saturday i disconnected everything and ran a cable from the Specturm router directly to my laptop and was only getting 80 Mbps at most. After wiring directly laptop, i tried a few different wiring scenarios by passing the switch just to run the google wifi, then running the google wifi behind the Ethernet switch and the speed never increased, it decreased if anything.
So if Specturn is showing over 4000 Mpbs on their device and i can only get 80 Mbps, what gives?

They lied.... if you did the speed test while being connected directly to the modem with an Ethernet cable. I would suggest telling them you are going to switch to a competitor if the issue is not resolved.

What kind of switch? Are you sure you have a GIG capable switch or maybe it's a 100 Mbps switch?

First thing i thought when you mentioned tech blamed your switch. Must be a 100mb switch instead of gigabit...test one of your devices from modem and see for yourself. Assume it’s a smart switch (unmanaged) so should be auto negotiate...

What are the specs on your laptop's ethernet / wifi? It looks like your ethernet may only be capable of 100 Mbps.

Damn, thats crazy and perplexing...will be interested to see what the true bottleneck is. Any chance you’ve checked the NIC configuration?

you are getting into terms i don't understand now. More than one person has said locally spectrum is blowing smoke when they are saying they are getting over 400 on their device. A couple of my neighbors are using a different company and are getting 500 on WiFi and approximately 900 wired. i am having that service installed on Thursday and i will report back with the speeds. i think all of my devices are fine, it is the provider.

Your picture of the speed test is from a phone and not a computer.

Try connecting your computer directly to their modem and use the speed test app from the windows store and then post the screenshot.

Did you watch the tech run their speed test?

I'd try a different cable, even buying a new one for control purposes. I had a cable that went bad and limited my speed and it took forever to figure it out in a similar situation

i did, used two separate cables

This is the missing info. It would be critical to know how the tech did their test to verify. That would answer almost all your questions.

Here's your problem. If the best description she can give is "some hand held device" then she doesn't know enough about IT to make a good decision. Most importantly though, the tech is either an idiot or a piece of shite.

If you've run an ethernet cable directly from the router to your computer (much less 2, like you mentioned above) and are still getting such low speeds then it's definitely on their end.

Have them come back out and make sure you're there. First, have the tech give it a shot to see what they get and how they are testing it (read: to see if they try to fudge it again). Next, run your speed test connected directly to their router. If the tech is trying to sandbag this he may blame your computer so it might be good to have another ready just in case.

That kind of no-assed service annoys the screaming shite out of me.

i do some electrical work on the side so my wife know what my fluke multimeter looks like. she said the best way to describe what the cable guy used to test the signal looked very similar to my multimeter.

century link showed up without the necessary parts to install my new service so he left, not sure why he showed up in the first place. i might try to call spectrum again this weekend and see if they can figure out why it is so slow coming out of their router when i do it vs when they do it. hopefully that will trigger another tech to come out.

just got century link installed. here are the results over wifi so far:
spectrum before installation

century after installation

of course the spectrum lady was willing to send another tech out to resolve the trouble.

Damn, at least when Cox lies to you they show you something just under the number.

Had 1 tech told me I would rarely get 300 plugged in, 300 is the max. Showed him I can get 330+ through wifi, but it requires me to reset everything more than once a week.

This is when I found out squirrels are attracted to coax cables He switched my exterior cable, and haven't looked back.

I missed your spectrum upload speeds before. You have a modem problem, IMO. I bet the tech connected ahead of the modem when they tested.

I see the problems like yours when channels are overused in a neighborhood. With a newer DOCSIS 3.1 modem you get access to the new channels even with lower speed tiers giving you more consistent speeds. you are competing with fewer neighbors for download channels over the coax.
