That's a pretty broad topic. It depends.

Updating software. Installing new software. Rebooting the server. Changing. Settings within the server.

Could be hardware maintenance or software maintenance.

Well, it could mean that they turned on an old air handler that hadn't been used in so long that it had rust particles in it and these particles got sucked into the power supplies of the servers popping them like popcorn. Thus, system time is required to clean that whole effin mess up.

It could mean that. Maybe.

You want to change as little as possible on a server, typically. The more concurrent users connected to it, the more true this rule is. Everything eventually needs to be updated. Security patches. Software enhancements. Servers are definitely updated. Just typically less frequently than an end-user's PC.

I double as our office IT guy, though I have no formal IT training. When I say "server maintenance," I actually mean, "Sorry, the server is down for a bit and won't be back up until I can google the problem. Might want to go grab an early lunch and pray you saved recently."

For me, it's usually patches or upgrades to the application itself. Then, you have patches and updates to the software and if its a physical server then you have firmware and hardware maintenance.

Outages are becoming fewer and farther between (rare, actually), due to virtualization, increasing redundancy and high availability.

Trying to bring it back to life. Like I said, it's not really maintenance, but if I say it is, then no one asks me anymore questions because they don't know any better.

They need patching just like anything else.

I sent out a "server maintenance" email today, but I am actually setting up a new Exchange Client Access Server at the moment. I don't like to tell them specifically what I am doing because it's like the placebo effect, they will start imagining email issues.
