We just built my 10 year old a computer for his bday and now I'm thinking about Christmas gifts. I feel like there are a lot of options and I'm not sure the best move. I've watched some YouTube vids but that's as far as I've gotten. Some suggest starting with the $189 Creality ender. Any one here experienced?

Ender 3 or 3v2. One of the best affordable 3D printers ever made. If your kid ends up not like the printer you're not out much money.
The upside is it's highly upgradable. There are a ton of custom hardware plug and play addons.

I have a highly modified Ender 3v2 and a modified Ender 5 plus. I have printed parts for my house, truck, boat, kayak and work.
My grandson is 8 years old and I am dying to buy him his for 3D printer right now.

Later after he gets some print time under his belt and since you built him a PC you'll there is Octoprint. He can set up his printer to run wirelessly with a Raspberry Pi.

I have 2 Anycubic Vypers. We have used them pretty much non stop for a year with basically no maintenance. They have autoleveling and you're literally printing in 20 minutes out of the box. Highly recommend it.

ETA: you don't need extra stuff to make this thing legit. You have everything you need immediately without all the tweaking and modding.

I go for cheap printers and do a few upgrades but for a kid I would get something a little less finicky. Ideally something like a Prusa would be great but that probably blows most budgets.

I like the ender 3 plus but I am not even sure you can order it without the "S1" upgrade anylonger.

I have had good luck with Voxelab Aquila but there are several versions out now and I am not up to date with what packages are "best".

You will need a couple of things along with your printer.

1. Silicone bed mounts to replace the springs.
2. A filament dryer. I like the Sovol 3D dryer box for the money, size, features. Don't get one without a fan.

When you get your bed you really need to clean it. I take it to the sink with some dawn and wash it really well. Then I clean it with alcohol until a paper towel comes up clean. I print on the bare glass side, I don't care for the texture on most beds.

I will second the Anycubic Vyper. I got mine right before CHristmas last year - no issues and have run a bunch of stuff through it.

There is a pretty strong Facebok gorup to offer help or suggestions if you run into any issues.

I have a Prusa MK3S+, I think people starting out are better going cheaper. Have a friend with Enders that print just as decent as mine. No reason to dump money on a Prusa. I had a lot of trouble before I did some upgrading with it when it was an MK3 and his worked out of the box pretty reliably.

I bought my kids an Ender 3 and they have figured out everything about how to use it. I have done nothing since the purchase.

this. i have 2 ender 3 v2 printers, and i can't imagine getting anything else. if they really get into it, and they begin to want to print larger models, you can easily upgrade the same printer into a larger bed size using an Ender Extender kit. other printers aren't so easy to upgrade, but i could be done.

3D printing is a hell of an "engineering" path to set your kids down to get familiar with. they'll learn:

- 3D modeling using CAD software.
- Coding/programming for writing custom firmwares.
- Wrench turning when performing maintenance/upgrades.
- Understanding the differences between filaments and what they can and can't do with them.
- They can even start a business on Etsy/eBay.

i've actually been selling ghostbuster props on Etsy for the past year and it's been a pretty profitable hobby for beer money.

I've built 3d printers for over 10 years. For that price yes a Creality 3d printer is good. But can your kid (OR YOU) repair them or willing to? It's not bad to repair or maintain. Just be aware it comes with a machine. But yes, the Ender3 is the way to go. I do have a youtube video of the unboxing but I'm not here to push my youtube channel.

I have an Ender 3 Pro. Great basic printer, but get ready for upgrades. All in all the upgrades are not terribly expensive.
