Thinking about getting my niece a laptop for her high school graduation present to prep for college. What would the OT recommend? Trying to keep it under 500 bucks if possible.

Asus makes decent Windows laptops although I'm not sure about getting a decent one under $500. Maybe $600-700. Get her one with an Intel I5 and at least 8 GBs of ram and a SSD

Lenovo 5i (office depot)

Keep an eye on this one.. OD will drop it to $479 every couple weeks

There's an Asus Vivobook F513 that they'll drop to under $500 routinely as well

I wouldn’t get a Chromebook. Saw one for the first time the other day and navigating it was terrible imo

Thats a nice gift for your niece.

i5 or ryzen 5
8gb
SSD

Can be bought for less than 500 if you search. From experience I can say both asus and lenovo as well as others make good stuff in that price range.

What kind of student discounts are available? She can probably get a better price than you can.

Not sure why this guy got downvoted. She could have certain needs in a laptop depending on her major.

She could run office 365 but it's subscription based and she would have to pay to continue the trial.

She should be able to get a discounted if not free sub while she has an .edu address.

What is her major?

OP was on the OT and I obviously forgot the r. Between the misspelling and genius that is tOT I wouldn't have expected anything else.
