thing seem to be on its last legs it was so slow. Had a 320 gig hard drive. I upgraded to a 500 gig SSD.
Unreal the speed difference. It's almost like having a brand new computer. I was expecting some improvement but not anywhere near what I got .

Yup. HDD are the real bottle-neck for most computers these days.

Ya don't say

Those 5400rpm hard drives will be impossible to deal with on PCs after going to SSDs

you people are the worst. Bringing the Apple/PC debate into everything, his post really had nothing to do with it being a mac, just about the difference the SSD.

I have been wanting to do this...I have a older MBP that needs some juice. Did you just change that...add more ram?

I had already boosted the RAM about a year ago. That helped a little but the SSD was like waiving a magic wand.

Adding more ram doesn't make your computer faster, unless you already max out your current allotted ram total.

I have a 2011 27" iMac with 32GB RAM. It was pretty fast. Had HDD that failed a couple of weeks ago. Took it apart, replaced the HDD, switched the optical drive with an SSD and run the OS, Photoshop, Final Cut, etc. off the SSD. Thing is blazing fast now. I had been considering purchasing a newer one, but that simple upgrade really took all incentive away, outside of the 5K screen I could have.

Heh. I been behaving for a long time now...

ETA: The only issue I have is that Rocket 31 owes me $100 on that Apple Watch bet we made last year. Every time I bring it up he avoids responding like he doesn't see my posts to him.....

Much, much easier than I thought it would be. They look difficult, but I was able to take it down, replace the drives and put it back together in less than 35 minutes......and it took that long just because of watching the video.
As long as you're careful with the LCD screen and pop it off correctly, it's quite simple from there. Just make sure you have the right tools.

Just curious, you seem to crunch a ton of video, why did not go with the Mac Pro instead of the iMac? I do realize the price difference but with all the RAM and storage you may have the world most expensive iMac.

HA! Honestly, because I got the iMac for free. Well, I say free, but it was given to me in exchange for work performed. It's a 2011. I've had it for nearly 3 years and haven't put a dime of my own money in it. Just my time in the occasional upgrade.

I have a late 2009 mbp. Put in 8 gigs of RAM and an SSD in 3 years ago and it shits all over my parent's mbp from 2013.
Knocking on wood because this thing has given me virtually no problems since I bought it other than having to replace the battery every few years.
On one hand I want to get a new one because let's be honest, a 7 year old computer is supposed to be obsolete but on the other hand I think buying a new mbp would just mean dropping over a grand on something that doesn't perform any better for what I use it for.

Didn't the 2013 MBPs come with SSDs? If so, that one still shits all over yours.

Did the same. Made a huge difference. You could also Upgrade to 8gb ram. That also gives it a boost.
