I will consider this a full time job for the next 6-8 months
I picked up 3 nib Honeywell zwave thermostats on marketplace for $100 so saving money where I can. Yes he's going to have 3 HVACs for that castle he's building
When I'm done, I'm tearing my entire system down and doing the same thing with it. It will be a little painful but it has to be done.
He's been a great friend over the 40 years I've known him and I'm Happy to do this for him and his family.

Just had an epiphany earlier. Will be using tailscale to connect to my friend's setup 300 miles away, we're both on gig fiber and will be adding dedicated nas at each end....
So duh, we can be each other's off-site backup cloud. Just clicked as I was grumbling about having to have a paid Big Tech cloud subscription component for off site storage.
Genius! Hopefully both our houses won't burn down at the same time and initially this will just be automated HA daily backups, etc and maybe even a machine snapshot depending on how big that gets.
ETA don't plan on shuffling massive Plex media back and forth. Maybe personal photo libraries but that's for down the road.

CAD, if you haven't already, look into spinning up a Proxmox Backup Server straight away!
It will save you a ton of headaches later, everything from VM backup/restore (aw-shite) to drilling down to file level recovery (oops). The latter was a huge time saver at the office dealing with junior admin's and dev's.

quick bump:
the whole setup took me only 2 or3 hours over the space of a couple of days when i could fit in working on it.
proxmox running win 11..better than native win 11 install from booting proxmox to logged into windows 11 is 8-9 seconds total.
debian container for tailscale
native home assistant install
configured everything, logged in, added extra utilties, etc.; took a snapshot of the entire setup and backed it up to my local PC.
so if the ssd died tomorrow, it would be annoying but i could be back up with all my server configured in probably 30 minutes or so.
now comes the fun stuff. plex server, frigate, etc.
not sure why anyone would fuss about using proxmox to run everything. its been a thing of beauty.
chatgpt builds powershell script for everything i'm doing so i dont have to know shite about shite. it just sets everything up then i log in and make sure everything is where it needs to be.

Pretty much doing extra work for work that's already been done. Scripts you copy and paste into proxmox shell and it creates the app specific VM/LXC for you

looks like the only one that may have helped was the initial HA VM spin-up but added to my provisioning to look for these first before building anything from scratch. looks like a good one already exists for Plex so perfect timing.

HAOS - already done manually
Windows - VM, already done
Tailscale - Debian LXC, already done
Plex - Proxmox Helper Script LXC.
Frigate - dedicated Linux guest + official Docker Compose.
Lore/diagnostics/small services - LXC or Docker depending on the application.

I'm happy I built my two hosts when I did almost exactly a year ago. I sold a spare kit of ram I bought for almost double what I paid
