I recently got att fiber (internet 500) and while the internet itself has been really strong throughout the house and even on my patio, I've started having issues in my living room.

Specifically, I have an older TV (not smart in anyway) with a fire stick 4k. Last night while streaming the LSU game off ESPN app there was a TON of buffering, but only occurred in living room, not on my patio (they are about same distance from router...patio closer, but has exterior wall to go through if that matters). The problem also translated to youtubeTV, but not as bad. Switched fire sticks and same issue. Oddly enough netflix and Hulu totally unaffected on same setup.

So...is this a router strength issue? Do firesticks in general have trouble with this? I doubt it, but is it the TV? TIA!

under the network info on the fire stick, what does it say about your WiFi quality?

Use your phone and something like speedtest.net or fast.com to see what the speed is in that location.

I had issues where my main router is upstairs and the stairs were blocking the signal to where my TV was downstairs. I ended up setting up a mesh network (Orbi) that has multiple access points to relay a stronger signal to where my TV is.

I had a dual band router that would automatically select 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz bands for each device. The firesticks would always connect to the 2.4 GHz band because the radio channel was too high on the 5 GHz band. Once I lowered the radio channel it seemed to help. 2.4 GHz bands can be interfered with by all sorts of things. Cordless phones, microwaves, even your neighbors cordless phone.

You can download a wifi analyzer and see what wifi channels your neighbors routers are using and maybe get to a less crowded channel.

A wired connection is always going to be the best solution though. Pulling network cable through your house might be a lot of work but terminating the ends is really easy. It's well worth the trouble if you're planning on staying at that house for a long time.

Just curious, do you have a soundbar with wireless speakers? I had a similar issue and found out it was due to the wireless speakers and the tv interfering with each other.

I have a soundbar that connects to my phone via Bluetooth, but the speaker itself is wired to the TV.

I do have some wireless speakers on my patio just outside the living room though

I've got a Firestick and for some reason it likes to hop from 5Ghz to 2.4Ghz and vice versa which would cause issues. I've got strong wifi as I have 4 APs covering my house (all on different channels to minimize interference).

The only way I was able to solve this was to create a new SSID that was 5GHz only. No issues ever since.

Well...the 2.4/5 ghz is moot...I'm on the 5 ghz signal and it's still having issues

I always have great internet and routers and firesticks always gave me trouble. I use a refurbed roku ultra now and have no issue. Also, no issues with smart TVs or their built in apps.

Ironically I have similar issues with items that are right on a specific wall. Come to find out it's got a lot of fire retardant/fire stop stuff in that wall. It's thick as hell and basically cuts my signal strength from a close wifi node by 50-75%.

My solution was simply to drop ethernet lines through the wall below all that fire resistant shite in my wall.

Sometimes being on the 5ghz band is bad if it's on the edge of its strength. You can get 100-200mbps download/upload but also at times you can get 2mbps. It all just depends on if anything is blocking the signal and/or if it's right on the edge of its signal strength zone.

Might be a router issue. We have an Arris Surfboard modem/router combo and had all sorts of buffering issues via Firestick. Bought a used router at a garage sale for $1, hooked it up and disabled the onboard router and we've had no issues steaming since. We have 4 TVs with fire sticks and none buffer

3 Fire Sticks here, two of them are the new versions, the other is an OG. The newest one in our den seems like every other day it has a problem and needs to be reset just to work for the evening, compared to the oldest Fire Stick in the house that works with zero problems.

Make sure your ISP isn’t throttling you. Try using fast.com which is powered by Netflix

If that doesn’t seem to be an issue, then make sure the firstick isn’t overloaded with apps. RAM usage by background apps can cause buffering as well as not enough disk space
