Phillips Hue Questions

So I’m totally new to smart lights and have a few questions. My son is wanting lights in his room that can change color and also some to put behind his TV. All we have is a ceiling fan in his room for lights but it’s not on a dimmer. Will the Phillips bulbs work in there and I would need a hub too? Also is Phillips the best to go with starting our new?

Phillips is expensive and requires their hub. I bought a 3 pack of the regular white bulbs and several lightstrips when i first got into the smart lights 2 yrs ago. If i were you, i’d browse amazon and read some reviews. There are plenty of lightstrips that are a quarter of the price of the Phillips ones and do the same thing. I ended up with the Smart Life app for a pair of smart light sockets and it works as advertised. I’ve even bought additional multicolor light bulbs and sockets due to being compatible with Smart Life, and works easily through Alexa or Google.
In short, dont buy Phillips and find something cheaper on Amazon. Look for app that works with multiple manufacturers.

I own hue lights. While more expensive, these have been burning for over two years. Haven’t replaced a single one. Yes the bulbs can dim using the app.

I’ve had mine for three years. Love them. Yes one hub you will need but it connect like 38 lights. You can dim them and they also can’t be set with your tv to create flickering and brightness compatible with what your tv is showing on the screen.

Hue hub/lights while definitely cost more but you know they will work and work for a while.

I’ve had my Phillips Hue lights for 2 years and never had an issue. The bulbs go on sale often if you want to expand/replace.

Is there an ikea nearby? Likely the ceiling fan uses candelabra style bulbs and those are pricey from hue.
You can buy candelabra bulbs for $6/ea at ikea and pair then with your hue hub just like the rest of the hue lights.
Only white though but they will dim.

Where do I find Hue color recessed LED for my eve lights and front patio?
I see a bunch of knock offs online but nothing by Phillips.

Well let me know if you still want one...$20 plus shipping brand new. I got a few extras when I got a deal on BR30 starter sets a few months ago at home depot

For the $$$ there are lots of better options out there.
And remember, once you pick an ecosystem, you are basically locked into that one unless you want to start over.

thats not true at all. i have hue, feit, osify, ge, cree, ikea and probably 2 or 3 other brand smart bulbs and they can all 100% be controlled by both my smart hub or alexa. you can build groups and create routines in alexa easily meaning a simple 'turn of the basement' or 'dim the basement 50%' will work with any smart bulbs.

I've never used the Phillips Hue but I haven't seen a lot of negative reviews about the product.
I'd like to propose an alternative that doesn't require a hub. LifX bulbs have their own built-in router hence no need for a hub. However, they are more expensive. An A19 medium based bulb is about $35 but you can typically find them on sale between $20-$30. Once you screw it in and turn on the power it's just a simple matter of connecting it to your wifi through the app. Once connected you have a bunch of control options via the app and they can also be controlled with Google/Alexa devices.
They also have the light strips for behind the tv.

This guy knows what’s up. I can control my hue lights and my smart life plugs and switches from Alexa as well.

Home depot sells phillips hue and phillips wiz. The wiz bulbs are very nice and inexpensive. No hub required and works with Alexa and Google. I have Hue and Wiz in my house. I like both very much but I give the edge to Wiz because of the price and not having to have a hub.
