My 8 year old 55" RCA stopped displaying the picture. I'm fairly certain the backlight is out and we are going to upgrade. We have a very large blank wall above some 40" tall cabinets where this TV will go and about 12' to the couch.

The room has a large bank of windows and almost all the seating and viewing is at an almost straight-on angle.

We aren't in the market for spending more than $1500 on a TV at this time and really aren't video-philes. Most of the screen time is kids shows, the occasional movie and live sports (lsu football and pelicans basketball).

Also, we have plenty of streaming devices (fireTV sticks) so the native smart platform isn't very important. If it's a good native platform, we would use it but otherwise we can just plug in a firetv stick.

All that being said, I've narrowed down the choices to the TCL 5 series for $800 and the Hisense U8H for $1500. From what I've read, the TCL 5 series is better than the hisense U6H ($800) at the same price, and nearly as good as the U7H ($1100) for cheaper. The TCL 6 series is a step up at $1500 but at the same price, the Hisense U8H is a better buy.

So is the difference in these 2 classes of TVs significant enough to justify nearly double the price for the U8H? Or should I just get the cheaper option and trust I'm not refined enough to tell the difference?

U8H had a mini LED backlighting - and will get brighter than the TCL. If you have a bunch of windows / room gets bright it will be better for that, if not, and you don’t care about picture quality go TCL

I would get the cheaper option if I were you. If you were doing more critical viewing the U8H would make more sense. Considering your use case I think the TCL would fit your needs well.

Got the series 6 65" TCL from BB on friday for 699. Very impressed with the picture. I'd been leaning to hisense 65" U8, but not with the TCL on sale. Check out Rtings.com, their head to head set comparisons are terrific.

You need 120hz (live sports). You can get a Samsung in that size for $1500 with 120hz so I’d avoid the hisense

I think the 60hz vs 120hz debate is overrated. Especially when discussing motion blur.

The main advantage of 120hz panels is when watching 24fps content. A 60hz panel has to use 3:2 pulldown which causes judder, where a 120hz panel simply repeats each frame 5 times.

As far as motion blur, response time is more important than refresh rate. Rtings has this to say about the 5 series watching sports

quote:

The response time is good enough that you won't see much blur behind fast-moving objects.

Anyway when someone is upgrading from an RCA (which died as a company in the mid 80s) they aren't really going to sweat much of a difference between panels. So why not save some money.

I picked up a TCL 5 55" on black Friday for under 200. Good bedroom TV. Cannot compare with high end led or even average oled. Consider your application. And get a soundbar/sub.

Fair enough. As long as the screen isn't totally washed out during the day, pretty much any of my options should be an upgrade.

As luck would have it, the RCA randomly started working last night on my last ditch attempt before buying the 5 series so I'll be waiting to purchase until I see a steal of a deal on either a TCL or Hisense in the sub $1500 range.

As to the Samsung suggestion, their lower and mid tier TVs have pretty awful reviews comparatively from everything ive read

For $1500 I'd go with the Sony 75" X90

Go look at them in person at Best Buy before making a decision . I was in a very similar situation in December and based on specs online was looking at the TCL and Hisense. Because of how my room lays out I wanted to see what they looked like when viewing from the side instead of star ahead of the tv. The TCL was disappointing in person, the Hisense was better, but they didn’t have it in a 75”. I ended up getting this LG that had recently been reduced from $1,500 to $1,150 and is now $999.

Under no circumstances ever look at an OLED and your life will be great. If you do, you’ll never be satisfied with your TV again.

If you buy Chinese, you buy twice.

Can't believe in 2023 Americans are still buying cheap Chinese junk. Spend an extra 100 and get a Vizio Quantum P. Better product and American.

Only buy American, Japanese and Korean electronics.

Buying Chinese electronics is akin to the Germans buying their gas from Russia.

My bad, I linked the wrong TV. It was actually the QNED80. LINK and is 120hz it’s not the best TV, but it’s been a nice upgrade for me and I like the LG smart TV software.

I don't think you can use the term "moving up" if you're considering TCL or Hisense.
Wait, I just noticed you have an RCA (really?)

I guess you are moving up after all.
