Just got in an ecobee3 lite, wink relay and an echo dot. I already have a wink hub 2 and go control alarm system.

I have 2 questions.

Has anyone had trouble pairing the ecobee 3 lite with wink? I have the ecobee set up and the app activated, wink says it cant find a thermostat in the ecobee app. When i go into the ecobee app, it's there.

Can echo be used to activate wink shortcuts? I have it controlling fan and light that are hooked up to my wink relay, but those are the only two devices that show up. Alexa didnt recognize any of the gocontrol sensors or alarm.

Yeah, I was not able to set them up with my Pixel phone. I had to pair them with the ihome app with my wife's iPhone. One that was done I could add it to my wink app on my Pixel, and control it through wink.

The ihome app for Android is spotty.

ETA:. The devices themselves are high build quality, and are compatible with every thing once u get them setup.

Can you pair the iHome smart plugs with your Wink hub? $20 is a reasonable price for smart plugs, but the newer plugs are a bit more interesting. Belkin's Wemo Insight plug includes energy monitoring and is $10 more than their base plug, Wemo Switch. If you have any desire for energy monitoring, gumption says hold off on the iHome plugs.

Personally, I have gone the route of Belkin's plugs and use IFTTT to create more advanced rules than what is offered out-of-the-box. I have 1 Wemo Switch ($29 at Home Depot last week) and 1 Wemo Insight Switch ($49) that I have synced to my google calendar through IFTTT. When I travel for work, vacation, etc..., I have indoor plant lighting that is driven based on keywords in my calendar for switching the lamps on and off.

I am a renter, so plugs are a bit more attractive to me until I settle down permanently.

Yes, ihome connects with Wink if you have an iphone to pair the plug with the ihome app first. The Android version of the app is crap.

Speaking of energy monitoring, I just purchased the Sense one that connects to the breaker box. Probably wasted $300 dollars

I am still broadening the scope of my smart tech knowledge. Does Sense measure total power consumption of your home?

I saw where the Belkin Wemo Switch is being replaced with a model very similar to iHome's smartplug. I haven't decided how they are charging $35 for the mini-plug and $40 for the older model. LINK The mini-plug is the way to go

Hey guys,
I'm pretty new to the "hub-life" of IoT. I've had a few wifi devices for years, but recently bought a smartthings hub and some zwave switches and controllers. (I know, wrong thread )

Anyway, I was hoping to get some ideas from the community here on more use cases. So far I've aimed at solving a few frustrations around the house. (Turning off all lamps in a lamp-filled living room with one button push, putting light switches in places that they SHOULD be, knowing if my garage door is shut while sitting in bed)

Now I'm looking to expand to solve problems I didn't know I had.

I think my next purchase will be putting a multi-sensor in my freezers to alert me if the door isn't closed or if the temp drops.

What are some of your current/planned use cases for your smart gear that go beyond thermostat control and turning on and off lights?

sensors on doors, wine cabinets (anywhere children shouldn't be), behind safe to notify you if it ever moves (cheap security, lol). turning on attic pull chain lights when the stairs are opened. leak detectors around washing machines and dishwashers. sensors on mailbox to know when mail has arrived (CAD is one of only ones that I know that did this ).

ETA: control pool pump with phone

its been under 10 degrees for 3+ days here now and all my GE link bulbs in outdoor fixtures have stoppped working as well as my outdoor pool gate and mailbox sensors.

i hope the cold weather didnt kill all the batteries.

i guess i'll have to do the stupid 'reset' trick with the GE bulbs.

go control zwave sensor. you can spray paint with outdoor paint to survive the elements (except apparently very cold days).

i'm wondering if the cold killed the battery.

That's what I figured.

I was considering buying a few Lutron controls for lamps. Much cheaper to just buy the GE or Cree bulbs. I hadn't considered that before because I thought they were way more expensive than they are.

The wife was sitting at the island yesterday helping with homework when the mail came and I got a text "fix the GD lights!"

So the good news is all my lights and sensors are back online.

The bad news is the wife is not a fan of mail-is-here green ambience.
