ETA: This guy writes a pretty serious blog dedicated to Amazon Fire TV, and supposedly it will be released tomorrow and start shipping on 9/30. I guess we shall see.

One of my most trusted sources has just informed me that the new Amazon Fire TV will be revealed and available to preorder tomorrow, September 17th. I’m told the leaks and my discoveries are pretty spot on. The new device is expected to arrive at customers’ doors on September 30th. No word yet on pricing, but we’ll know soon enough.

This was my previous post on the subject.

Amazon’s Fire TV media streamer hasn’t had a hardware update since it rolled out in early 2014, but all signs are pointing to a new streaming box debuting soon, possibly with 4K capabilities. The latest hint is a mysterious new hardware filing with the Federal Communications Commission by Quill Royal LLC from Boise, Idaho for an “HDMI Digital Media Receiver.”

Quill Royal appears to be a shell company, which is a method Amazon typically uses to file its hardware devices with the FCC in secret.
The latest filing was first uncovered by blogger Dave Zatz, who’s making a habit of uncovering Amazon’s secretive public filings.

There’s not a whole lot of detail about the new box except that it comes packing 2.4GHz and 5GHz 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi, an ethernet port, HDMI, Bluetooth 3.0 +EDR and Bluetooth 4.1 LE, USB port, and a microSD card reader. In one document there’s a reference to the device playing back a 4K MPEG4 file.

While it’s only an educated guess that this is a new Fire TV, the other strong sign that a new set-top box may be incoming comes from Amazon itself. The online retailer is currently out of stock of the Amazon Fire TV—a state of affairs that was first noticed in mid-August.

The impact on you at home: With an apparent FCC filing from Amazon showing up and the Amazon Fire TV out of stock for a while now, there’s a good chance this is the real deal. If you’ve been thinking about picking up an Amazon Fire TV, you might want to hold off on grabbing the device from another retailer.

There may be more Amazon Fire devices on the way too. On Thursday morning, Zatz said via Twitter that he may have also found three new Amazon tablets, a new Fire TV remote, and a new Fire TV controller

There's an app in the Amazon App Store that will let you AirPlay to it.

Amazon putting Fire and Prime in front of everything annoys me.

Whole lotta meh. I run Kodi on Firetv and streaming HD is tough enough. Streaming 4k will be impossible.

Releasing before the new apple TV's is a good move.

Hopefully the voice search is improved and expanded beyond just amazon content.

Obviously the big selling point on the 1st gen is the ability to sideload apps. Hopefully that is still there

So what everyone wants to know...did they block sideloading APKs?

As expected, Amazon is adding its "Alexa" voice assistant.

The microsd slot is a nice add as well

So Fire TV stick remains the same hardware-wise, just new software to support the new voice remote.

New Fire TV box hardware looks nice. I might bite when it inevitably goes on sale for $80-84.

I wish they'd put two USB ports on it, though I guess you can just use a hub for multiple USB needs.

Even so, a hub is ugly sticking out of the box.

On that note, it looks like they removed the optical audio port in favor of the microsd slot. Only so much room I guess

I'm trying to find info about the sideloading capabilities, but I'm coming up empty. I'll update when I can.

Losing the optical port is a understandable, considering most people who have premium audio have HDMI receivers.

This is a big release...especially for the 4K crowd. I will be buying this for my non-smart (older) 4k tv which just has a chromecast on it right now (no cable box).

Only other major 4k streaming device is the Shield TV which is $200 and doesnt have Amazon Prime video which absolutely sucks (if you have it). Voice search is a big addition (like the Roku 3)

Exactly. Very understandable

I personally use the optical ports on both of my fire tv's. 1 of my receivers is older and doesn't have HDMI.

With my newer receiver, I ran the HDMI direct to the TV because my wife doesn't want to fool with the receiver when using the fire tv.the optical gives me the option bypass the receiver but still use it when I need it.

But for the majority, they probably don't need it.

Still no Netflix voice search. That is a bit disappointing. In fact full search integration is really the only reason I would upgrade at the moment. No sale.
