Ok so I already have 2 Canary All-in-one cameras that we have in both of our girls rooms that we currently use as baby monitors. That being said, I've been looking at the Nest cams to possibly replace the Canary cams. Here's why:
1) Amazon Show integration.
2) Faster performance
3) Nest ecosystem. Possibly getting nest thermostat and maybe eventually nest smoke alarms.

My question to the board is are there any reasons not to go with Nest? The Amazon show integration is actually pretty huge for us. We have a Show in the kitchen and saying "Alexa show us Baby A or Baby Bs" room and then have it sit on that cam for 30 mins is nice.
It might be silly but also eventually getting the nest smoke alarms plus nest thermostat and them playing nice together also seems like a plus.

Any opinions on this from you guys?

I'm not a fan of putting cameras that live on the internet in kid's rooms.

Fair enough. I'm not that paranoid though. I've actually set the "recordings" to off just cause we mainly view the live feed only.

I believe that's part of canary's charm is they use 256 encryption vs Nest using 128 or something but meh.

I have a nest outdoor cam and do enjoy it.

PRO:
- The picture is clean, even at night
- i don't have any connectivity issues
- The microphone is very sensitive so I can hear voices very clearly
- 2 way communication

Con:
- Storage (Nest ecosystem costs $10 for video stoage and $5 or more for every device after that, i believe. This is the biggest gripe for many in my opinion)
- price

I know you are asking solely about indoor cams but giving you my thoughts on the outdoor cam and nest general since you will likely go to the ecosystem.

I do have a Nest protect and it's the coolest smoke/co detector I've seen. Wish it had a temp sensor on it though.

Ironically on Amazon, the outdoor cam is currently the same price as the indoor cam. May see if BestBuy will match that or just order one of the outdoor ones from amazon.

Is it bad that I don't even care to store the video? I don't really have much need for using them for security currently. Now in a few years when my kids get older, I'd re-purpose them for actual security cams.

So do you have them connected to your 2.4ghz or 5ghz channel? Mine would be far away so would have to use the 2.4ghz channel. Any connectivity issues there?
Also, when you launch the app and go to view your live feed, how long does it take to pull up? How delayed is the video/audio?

I was reading some intriguing use cases that if there were a fire or smoke and the nest detected it AND you had a nest thermostat it would shut it off so you're not circulating the smoke, etc. Also it would trigger the cameras to record in case something bad happened.

It's an intriguing use case but hope to God you never have to ever use that 'feature'.

Canary integration coming to Alexa Show

quote:

The new Canary skill for Amazon Alexa will be available on the Echo Spot, Echo Show, and compatible Fire TVs, and will let you stream live video from your Canary devices. Once available and enabled, you’ll just have to say “Alexa, show me the Living Room.” or “Alexa, show me mom’s house.” and you’ll be able to Watch Live from your Alexa-enabled devices, just like that.

This integration will be launched in the coming weeks and available on all Canary devices and to all Canary users. Additional info can be found on our blog post.

I understand your logic and I thought the same thing but consider if you ever go somewhere on vacation and aren’t able to get notifications or want to access old footage for a neighbor who had their car vandalized, etc. it’s good to have the ability to store footage if needed

As for connectivity, I’m on 2.4 ghz with ATT and have about 18 down when it’s all said and done. The router is about 10 feet from the camera so connection is close however, I have other things pulling wireless so it’s always a competition for bandwidth. With that said, it’s still pretty good.

The app is pretty good and opens pretty quickly however I will say if I attempt to scroll to fast through previous footage or jump to a specific event further back, it can lag or freeze for a moment but it’s only isolated instances.

One other thing to know is that while it’s not a huge deal, alert fatigue will happen at some point. I have created zones for my camera outside so it doesn’t pick up cars going down the street but inevitably, it still does and send a notification it thinks it’s spoetted someone. Another annoyance is that it will pick up lights from cars in that zone. For example, if that portion of the zone is dark but a car light shines on it and brightens it, the camera recognizes that as actovty and will send a notification. Just something to consider with the notifications.

Overall, I’m happy with the app and camera. My wife likes it too as it’s easier for her to navigate and that’s really the end goal for me since she doesn’t always like technology.

I have a nest thermostat and a nest video cam in my 2 yr olds room and I love the interface of the nest app on my phone- very convenient and easy to use.

If I add any more devices, they will definitely be nest products

Just curious on the nest cam. When you load the live video, about how long does it take to load? 5 seconds?

My Canary can be anywhere from 5-10 seconds or simply not load. How is the delay, maybe 2-3 seconds?

Depending on the connection speed of the device I'm using. Anywhere from instantly to 5 seconds.

Typical 4g connection on my phone 1-2 seconds.

I love Canary cams! They look like speakers at first glance. It's one of our choices when still finding a monitor for my toddlers. But ended up getting a different brand. I read this post that its sensors are a bit too sensitive, though the recordings are immaculately clear, which ofcourse, is more impt.

There's nothing faulty I can find with nest. We have the Nest thermostat. Ours went up and running very smoothly, the installation was quick. But later on we found out it can't work with our apple homekit (since it's owned by google), But overall, got no grudges against Nest.

I think OP mentioned using the camera as a baby cam. I’m not sure how much mileage a perv will get watching a baby sleep in a crib.

I understand the concern if we’re talking about a kid maybe 4 and over.

I am about to start framing my new house, and will be running wires for outdoor security cams, and possibly even a few indoors. I have a Nest thermostat at my current house and would love to continue my Nest ecosystem.

My concern is that running the Nest wiring would keep me married to Nest for the forseeable future. If I pre wired for a traditional PoE system, then as cameras get better, I can plug and play for as long as PoE is in use. I love Nest, but I am afraid of being boxed in to where 5-10 years from now I will have to retrofit if I want to change hardware.

PoE is a no brainer for new builds. This is coming from someone with 5 nest cams and 2 nest thermostats.
