I have not paid attention to the current tech offerings for TV these days.
I'll be buying one that's around 50" or so.
I see 4k, UHD, Ultra, QLED etc.
What should I pay attention to?
No gaming. Just watch shows, movies and sports.
TIA

The important question, how much do you want to spend?

Samsung
Have owned Samsung, Vizio, Sharp and now back to Samsung. IMHO, Samsung gives me the best viewing experiences. Get a TV with basic Smart functions and you’re good to go. I linked a 65” at Sam’s which is the 4K version of what I currently own. Just realize when you go to view TV’s, they are mostly calibrated to high settings for extremely vivid viewing and not conducive to viewing in a normal setting. Good luck!

Always had Samsung, but bought this sony about a week ago. Really like it so far, and pretty good deal. Might be bigger than you want, but they have a 55" version as well.
Sony 850e

I was gonna start a similar thread about this. Im in around the 1k-1200 range
Quick question for anyone. this set will be a game room tv and will probably only be about 10ft from the couch in that room. Is 65" too much for a limited space like that. Would a 55 in the same price range be the better move?
Sorry for the slight hijack, OP

How important is HDR?
If you use Netflix or amazon a lot and watch blu rays it’s important, more and more of their content is HDR, along with movie streaming services.
If you just watch cable tv then it’s not important. It has to have an HDR picture for it to take effect.
But be careful, not all TVs labeled as HDR are true hdr. You want one with a 10 bit panel

GREAT info. Thank you. Any other specs to prioritize?

If you can wait a few days, slickdeals.net usually has some good offerings. Woot.com can be good too, but they don't have TV's very often

We have a 55" and it's about 10 feet away from our couch. There are times I kinda wish it was bigger... I don't think 65" would be bad, but I definitely wouldn't go over that

If i were going to buy a new one today with a 1k budget it would be a Sony 800 series or better.
Just do this and be done with it...on sale eve.
Sony 900 49"

You wont always get the full HDR experience depending on the content, but i dont think i would buy one without it if you are planning on keeping the TV for 5-10 years.

Thanks to all for the feedback.
Ending up getting this 55" Samsung for $470 at Sam's

I'm happy with it.

First rule of HD tv buying...always get at least one size larger than you think you want (assuming it's in your budget). So if you're thinking 50", get a 55" or 58". You can get a great Samsung for less than a grand. Hell, this 65" is only $900.
