Looking for something to do "cropping", and other very basic editing. There seem to be many free downloadable editors, what is a good one?

We talking images in general, or photos from your camera? Gimp is probably the best general image editor, but I wouldn't use it as my primary RAW importer (the program that 'develops' your camera photos').

If it's from a camera, I'd see if I could find a free version of Capture One software; I've played with a lot of the free stuff and C1 seems to have the best output.
Capture One and DXO aren't free in general, but they do seem to offer old versions free occasionally; and Capture One also makes/made stuff for specifically Sony cameras, maybe more.

If it's just kind of a one off thing any free trial of Lightroom or such may be good.

Gimp is good if you need Photoshop-like capabilities. But if you're just doing very basic editing IrFanview LINK / is excellent and easy to use.

there are many online options for basic editing as opposed to a downloadable editor. Gimp is good if you want to get into advanced, more complicated editing, but online editors are quick and easy.

Photopea is an impressive free online editor. There might be a bit of a learning curve if you're not already familiar with Photoshop, but it's my go-to image editor if the computer I'm on doesn't have Photoshop on it.

PC... GIMP is nearly as robust as Photoshop.
Phone... Lightroom. Even the free version is good. Look into presets for some easy photo tuning.
