sounds like you have a battery thats gone to shite, it's pretty cheap to get them replaced at an apple store now.

If you are running iOS 11.3 or later you can check the health of the battery by going to settings > battery > battery health. If the battery health is below 80%, your battery has been consumed and needs a replacement. The battery replacement would run $29 until the end of the year.

Why wouldn't it need to be replaced at <20%?

If it gets to below 20% the phone would be basically unusable as a mobile device. It would need to be charged too frequently. The percentage in the battery health is not the current charge. It is the capacity. When the capacity of the battery drops below 80% then the battery is considered compromised and should be replaced. Mine is getting close.

Exactly, though there can rarely be other battery issues that can be present before the battery is consumed. Generally speaking replacing a battery (or any consumable part) early is akin to replacing tires on a truck before they are worn -- you can, but what's the point.

I did not know this, that is good info (sitting at 86%).
If this isn't the issue, the last time I had this issue I was 2 updates behind. Ran the updates and did a hard reset and my battery life was back to normal. At the very least, a reset should be considered.

Mine has been shite. I just checked and it’s at 63%. It says I should replace it. I guess I got to go to the fricking apple store.

My battery health is 83% on my iPhone 6s.
It runs like crap already.
Can’t decide if I want to upgrade or replace it.
I think Sams club has [edit: $300 off] this weekend on iPhones. That may shove me towards an upgrade.
