Looking for a no contract cell phone

I don't know where to look. It would be for an elderly relative on a fixed income for mostly emergencies. Maybe some texting and sending pics. I googled, but would rather someone with experience give me their pros/cons of different options. Any companies and price ranges would be appreciated.

Checkout Consumer Cellular. They market to older people but I've had my service with them for several years. They use ATT network and don't throttle data speeds like other low cost carriers.

All companies offer a no contract option. You just have to either bring your own phone or buy it from them outright.
The only "contract" now is essentially phone financing.

Mint or Ultra may still have a $3 per month plan. Pay as you go above whatever the base is.

If you have Tmobile it is super cheap to add a line, lately they have been giving away free lines just add tax and fees.

ting is nice it has Verizon towers, no hold times and is answered by Canadian customer service. They charge $6 for an active line plus tiers of usage for texting, minutes, data. The customer support is first class.

Thanks to all that replied. Good info, and several leads I will check.

Consumer Cellular is the correct answer. We pay half of what we paid for T-Mobile, and CC uses the T-Mobile network.
ETA: Just looked at Ting - it's twice much as we spend on CC.

Well the OP mentioned "using for emergencies" so I was thinking $6 to have a line active and it'd vary between $6-and up per usage that month, might be a good option. Also, when you call them, there's no hold and you get a Canadian customer service who speaks very good English.
I never said it was the cheapest. I know about 30 companies cheaper than CC and Ting.

Straight talk has always been good. The only reason I switched was bc altice mobile offered 20$/mo unlimited for suddenlink customers
