what should I be looking at in a new monitor? HDMI, adjustable screen, VGA, resolution, brand, touchscreen, etc.

It will be for home office use, not for gaming

And screen size are the only things you need to worry about.

4k monitors have become more and more affordable, but it depends if your device is capable of outputting to it. They're by far the best for screen real estate

are there brands to consider more than others...and/or brands to steer clear of?

I haven't bought a stand alone computer monitor in 20 years...and it came with the desktop I bought...

Are touchscreen desktop monitors becoming more prevalent?

Not really because they're kinda useless unless you do some graphic design work with a pen.

Asus, LG, Samsung, Acer, they're all the same. They all probably use an LG display anyway

Vague question, what is your budget?

Are you looking for 4K?

People make the mistake that 4k is only for gaming and videos. It's one of the best productivity resolutions

Edit: but budget is the most important thing

No, but neither is a new monitor.

Go to bestbuy and view some webpages on the 4k Monitors. Viewing text in 4k is easier on the eyes.

What output is in your laptop?

You don’t want a Display Port only monitor if your laptop is VGA output only for example.

It’s a Microsoft Surface.

Depending on the model you will need a mini-display port or USB C adapter. Then you can go to HDMI or Display Port so your options are pretty wide open.

Personally, I bought a 35inch ultra wide last year for my home PC and I don't think I could ever go back. It is 3440x1440. It's great for my gaming PC or for MS Office type work.

Depending on the brand there are 34in, 38in, 43in and even 49in Ultrawides.

Lookung at anywhere between $550-$1200 depending on exactly what you want.

Something like THIS would be good for Office type stuff.

That is where I would be looking to spend my money.

Chicken, for productivity, Dell Ultrasharps are hard to beat from a price/quality ratio. I like the U2415 which are in 16:10 for productivity, but they even have a 28" under $300 now.

I use this:

29-inch LG UltraWide. I picked it up from Office Depot, however Costco will occasionally have them in stock as well (extra 1 year warranty given at no additional charge, I believe).

Works very well.

I paid around $250 (had an Office Depot coupon that was actually honored).

This.

Since you aren't going to be doing anything like competitive gaming or even movies, pretty much any TV or computer monitor that has HDMI or a Display Port will work.

What you should decide on next (before buying) is whether you want one big screen (like a 45" TV, for example) or to go dual screen with two smaller ones. If you decide to go with the latter you'll probably need a dock for your Surface).

Not to hijack thread, but if I my laptop (2012 MacBook pro non-retina) has a top resolution of 1200x800(ish) but I buy a monitor with a resolution of 1920x1080+ will my resolution stay low or will the laptop adapt to the monitor?

The video card is the limiting factor. If it can only push 1200x800, then that's it. And splitting the display to 2 monitors may decrease the max from that. Having said that, it could be that your built in display is 1200x800 max. Double check your documentation.

Having said all that, your monitor can support lower resolutions, but if you have the choice, you should try to use the monitor's native resolution whenever possible for best results.

Higher res monitors are backwards compatible with lower resolutions, basically.

Your laptop should be able to output 1080p (probably higher resolutions too)
