LG OLED TV's...are they worth it?

I've been considering pulling the trigger on a 65" LG OLED TV because there are some decent deals out there right now, and Ive been struggling with the decision.

I currently have a 70" 4K Vizio w/ HDR in the location where I would be installing the LG.

Anyone that has recently "upgraded" to one of these TV's, did you feel like it was worth it? Is the picture that much better?

Without getting overly technical the OLED will be a big upgrade from a Vizio unless it is a P series Vizio (which would still be an upgrade just not a huge one). I don't think Vizio made a 70" P series though.

i just purchased the 65" LG OLED C7 over thanksgiving, and it's pretty damn amazing.

I was coming from a 65" Samsung KS8000. My main complaint with the Samsung, was the flashlighting in the corners and bottom bezel, which was really noticeable when HDR settings were triggered on Netflix. The OLED has none of that. That's always been my complaint with edge lit LED/LCD tv's. The true black really does make an incredible difference, and the image is overall better to my eyes.

now with that said, there are some things specifically that i liked more about the Samsung ks8000 then the LG OLED. For one, the samsung, and led's in general, can get MUCH brighter than the LG OLED, but if i had never experienced just how bright my samsung got i never would have noticed the difference with the LG OLED, it's still plenty bright, just not as bright. The other thing i liked more about my samsung was the smart remote. I was able to control everything easily and effortlessly with it, the lg remote, while i've gotten used to it and really like some of the special things it can do, does not operate all of my devices as smoothly, or in some cases not at all. the other thing i liked specifically about the ks8000 more than the oled was the design. the ks8000 has a really wide leg position which looked sharp, and the oled has just a plain fat center stand that pics up the lighting from the tv. i wish it had wider feet, or a slimmer design that didn't pick up the light from the picture of the tv. also, the lg app store is even more limited compared to samsungs app store. for example lg doesn't have hbogo which really pisses me off. and finally the built in sound on the lg 0LED really sucks. not a big deal because i use my surround sound for most everything, as i imagine most probably will do, but it's something i noticed. the samsung ks8000 had surprisingly decent built in sound. but those are just minor gripes.

Overall, for me picture quality is the largest determining factor when it comes to what i'm looking for in a tv, and I would highly recommend the LG OLED based on my experience. I'm very happy with it, and glad i upgraded. I would recommend getting some sort of protection plan that covers screen burn in, as i've read it can be an issue. So far i haven't had any problems with the tv though...knock on wood.

ETA: i've read a few comments on here in other threads about OLED's in general and judder while watching sports. i have ZERO issues with that. Even straight out of the box live sports action looked amazing to me. absolutely no judder when a QB throws the football, or when a goalie boots the soccer ball 3/4ths the way down the pitch.

I was able to get the B7A 65 for under $2k through the Army/Air Force Exchange online, so I jumped on that deal. It is definitely worth it at that price. It was a huge upgrade from a lower-level LG 4k set it replaced.

If I was in the market for a 55 or 65 inch tv, I’d bite the bullet and get an oled.

However, for my living room, 65 is too small and I’d rather get a 75” led for the same cost as a 65 oled. No way I’d spend $7k on the 77” oled. My living room is large enough that I’d spend the extra money on an 80 or 85 inch screen if possible.

Can you get rid of the soap opera effect on the LG like you can on the Samsung ? That just drives me insane I cannot and will not own a TV that cannot turn that off.

Nice write up. I will point out to anyone looking for LG OLED to get the C7 if they can. I'm thinking you got the B7? The C7 has the stand that doesn't pick up the light and it has much better sound as it has the Dolby Atmos chip.

If you really want better sound and picture on glass get the E7 and Massdrop has it right now for a smoking deal for the 55" or 65" LG OLED E7

Naw, I got the c7. It’s the same as below with that slanted base that picks up light from the tv, and has the Dolby Atmos chip. I’ve gotten used to the stand though. Just a minor gripe.

And to Burke985, yes you can turn off the “Soap Opera Effect”. I believe LG calls theirs TruMotion? I hate that too and it’s the first thing I do on any new tv.

Thanks everyone for the input. Went and purchased a 65B7 today. Now I need to research some soundbars.

Also did a little research. Costco carries the B7p instead of B7a. The p is a "warehouse club" model that has the Dolby atmos chip. Just an fyi to anyone looking to purchase.

Hope you enjoy, and there are a lot of videos/sites online for fine tuning your new set. I used these settings from rtings.com for the most part. Just search your model and settings and it will pull up a lot of info, too much tbh , on the best picture settings.

I bet some flat black spray paint would help the reflections on those stands.
