Laptop Wifi Speed?

My over five year old laptop will get fast speed (270+- download) from my Cox modem sometimes, but most times it drops to around 30mbps download. The laptop wifi driver is up to date. I tried a TP Link USB adapter and it did the same thing. One time it will work fast and the other times it would go slow. I have used several internet speeds apps for testing this.

Any idea what is going on? I have changed out the hard drive and battery on it, but I don't know if I can change out the wifi board. I have the Intel Dual Band wireless AC3165. Using ethernet is not an option. Looking at the advanced setting there are two settings for 2.4 and 5. I have to have 2.4 for my printer. The settings are dual band 802.11 a/g and 802.11 a/b/g. Which one should I use?

I don't know much about that particular wifi card, but your problem sounds like the one I had with a laptop I bought my wife. Speed was generally great unless she went to a part of the house that had perfectly fine, but not great, signal strength. Then her speeds would fall through the floor. Swapped out her card for an Intel Killer Wi-Fi 6 AX1650x and haven't had any problems since. Pop open your device and see if the card is user accessible. If so, look into compatible cards and swap it out. They aren't terribly expensive, so it's worth a shot.

5GHz has higher throughput, but less range and 2.4GHz has longer range, but less throughput.

The newest Cox Panoramic modems support WiFi 6 & 6e (802.11ax).

Do you know which you have?

Summary of 802.11 standards and max throughput

This is the only option I have. My tablet gets over 300 mbps and my phone gets over 400 mbps.

I am sitting about 15' from the Cox modem.

Can I ask why?

Any time I try to help someone with Cox internet, first I see if there are any ISP alternatives. If not, second thing I do is tell them to return the crappy rental modem and buy your own modem outright along with a better router.

After that most problems go away and those that don't are more easily fixable.

The Cox modem has been working great for our two phones and two tablets. It is my laptop only that has speed issues. When my two year contract ends that has the free modem included I will look into another modem.

You sure it is a wifi issue. Plug it in with a network cable and verify speed tests.

How many walls are between your office where the laptop is, and the router/modem? What are they made out of? How far is the laptop from the closest ethernet jack (I'm asking to discover the viability of dropping a cheap WAP that's closer. (I realized when I was presenting to a client on Friday that there's a good chance that people may have thought I was talking about something related to Cardi B, but thankfully most of the American crowd seemed to be near 50.)

With 2.4Ghz, there was a rule of thumb, "the three wall rule." If a signal has to pass through three walls of drywall, you can expect reduced performance. Lord help you if you have plaster/lathe over metal screening.

Your chipset supports 802.11AC. If your modem doesn't support AC, you have had it way too long. With such old protocols, your old modem probably has a limited ability to channel hop when there are conflicts with neighbors. If your modem really is that old, call tech support when you're standing at the modem. When they run tests, unplug the coax from the modem, wait a few seconds, plug it back it. Repeat randomly while you're on the phone. They'll send a tech out, and any bro that's got more than 90 days of experience will replace the modem with a new release. After the tech leaves, reboot all devices and monitor throughput for a few days.

Since I changed the one setting to 802.11 a/b/g I have been getting faster speeds. Sometimes over 300 mbps. I have the 500 mbps plan, but my phone is the only device that can get that speed.

I do plan on checking the speed via ethernet cord sometime soon.

I finally got around to check this when my laptop was slow again. The wife download speed was 57 and the ethernet download speed was 94. Normally they are both over 300. My phone at this time was over 500. I have the 500 speed plan.

So my options are to replace the internal card or to get a better USB wifi adapter than what I got before. It was just as slow as my internal card was.

Sounds to me like you've eliminated wifi as the problem. If the speed drops that low via hardwire as well, then the problem is either something on your laptop (could be 3rd party software or a problem with Windows itself), or with your router (could be a setting or it could just be bad at routing) which you should replace regardless.

The Cox modem/router is part of a two year agreement that is free and I have unlimited data for $59 a month. I have a TP-Link AX3200 router in my closet gathering dust that I may hookup to see what happens. I will need to read up on how to do this.

Edit: I just checked the download speed and it is 328 mbps download and 58 upload. This is what is driving me crazy. It will work great and then it will work crappy.

The next time it is slow, log into the router and run an internal speed test. If the modem is having slow speeds then it's a problem with the modem/router or internet service itself.

Any chance you are only seeing slow speeds in the evening?

When I was on Comcast years go, my internet would always get significantly slower in the evenings. This was due to everyone being home and didn't have enough capacity to handle the demand.

Whenever I get a slow speed on my laptop I check my tablet or phone and they both have fast speeds.

I get the slower speeds at different times of the day. Yesterday morning the speed was only 37.

I finally broke down and installed a new wifi card in my laptop. The download speeds went from the mid 50's to over 500 mbps. I am paying for the 500 mbps plan from Cox.
