Im not the most tech savvy person in the world, but I had a friend tell me it was a great get and that I would end up using it a ton. I already have a firestick I only use for Watch ESPN and Netflix

Just curious other than the basics like Netflix/Watch ESPN what are some other apps/channels you guys would recommend. I have been reading about PSVue and Sling but I still have 6 months left on my directv contract.

I know you can rent/purchase movies, music, etc. Any advice about the apple TV is greatly appreciated.

you can download a lot of different channel apps and log into them with your Direct TV account to watch stuff on demand.

Real Racing 3. I'm not a videogamer but it is badass, feels like you are driving real cars.

I got one for Christmas, it's cool. I use mine as a front end for my music collection which is housed on an external hard drive connected to my iMac. There's and orange computer icon in the apps that I can use to browse my collection, and get this, I can play sound through the Apple TV or my Airport Express which is connected to my stereo through an optical cable...sounds and looks amazing.

You can AirPlay from any Applle device which allows you to mirror an iPad or an iPhone. I love the YouTube app, there's tons of amazing content like concert footage...and again I can play it all through my stereo.

IIRC PSVue and SlingTV don't have apps on AppleTV. I only have a 2nd gen AppleTV though.

it's excellent, except for one major drawback...no 4k capability, and it lacks a 1gig ethernet port, but it works flawlessly, wifi hits my peak speeds, and it's smooth. i just never use it anymore because of the no 4k.

There are sling PS vue and Directv now apps

I have figured out how to get live tv from fox and abc so far. CBS for some reason has a pay to view format for their content

I cut the cord and have owned all different devices (FireTV, Rocky, Chromecast, AppleTV). AppleTV was the most recent get and I have dropped all the others. I was shocked at how much I liked it because FireTV is a great device. Mirroring is a wonderful feature, and I use it daily. It stores your log in information for DirectTVNow and Will automatically log into various apps. The TV app integrates most streaming apps into one location so you don't always have to bounce between apps. Highly useful, but I would've never gotten it but for the free intro gift from DirectTVNow. Very pleasant surprise

I don't understand this concept any longer? You can pay like 7 bucks to Google Music and have every song ever made in existence. Then you can make your own playlists or whatever. Why would anyone still keep their own collection? That is probably less a month than the electricity to keep your music storage running.

That's fricking insane. Why would anyone want music fidelity 5 times the best streaming quality out there? IDK, probably because I'm not some chick listening to it on a wireless soundbar.

Do you even care what recording you get? A Jack-A-Roe from the mid 70's versus one from '88? Do you ever just listen to a whole album...you know, like sane people do? I can't even begin to comprehend where your head is at on this.

I listen to whole albums all the time. I am actually a soundtrack guy..music not songs. I have two different 7.1 setups in my house, one with some really nice speakers. Truthfully, I cant tell the difference. Maybe my ears are shot cause I was in TGBFTL for 4 years.

You probably can't tell the difference because there is so much processing going on in your setup to make a stereo mp3 track into a 7.1 output. I have a non-oversampling DAC and everything stays bit correct to 16bit 44.1kHz in stereo.
