Just swapped my wife's 2015 outback head unit for idoing

CAD knocking out projects left and right while the wife is out of town
If you're thinking about it, don't hesitate. It's only like $300 and if the YouTube and original instructions didn't suck so bad I could have knocked it out in well under an hour.
I couldn't stand to go another day without carplay and android auto.
The tl;Dr
Disassembly:
- ac bezel below OEM unit popped out with minimal prying and 2 screws
- vent bezel popped out with minimal prying and zero screws
- OEM unit popped out with with only 4 screws. Total: 6 easy to access screws.
Install
- throw out the provided carlink cable module
- throw out the giant wad of rca cables module
- throw out the 2 4G cables
Everything else will connect and connect only one way
Leftovers
- the ground connector from the OEM
- the USB connector from the OEM..but if you buy the $12 red wolf adapter from Amazon before you start, you can connect it and keep your existing usbs
- ignore the unused yellow rca cable that says "camera"from the idoing. The factory rear camera is already handled by one of the other harnesses
- the OEM bracket won't fit the new unit? bullshite. You can find one hole that lines up and while that would have probably been enough, you can actually screw the other 3 into holes on the new unit that will overlap the bracket and lock it in place. Why not? If you don't screw them into the new unit you're just going to lose them anyway.
Performance:
- right away the Harmon kardon speakers sound 10x better than the factory head and there's an absolutely ridiculous amount of audio features you can tweak. Insane.
- connect to your home wifi so you can go to the store and get updates to the core apps before proceeding
- YES the freaking back camera frame overlay not only works but you can adjust it to curve as you turn the wheel and lots of other settings. SECRET: YOU HAVE TO GO INTO THE FACTORY MENU use 3368 as password and hit the cryptic "original car agreement" menu then turn the grid on and tweak it. Everyone says you lose the overlay because they're stupid and didn't dig through the menus. Not a single YouTube video mentions this.
That's about it. Full steering wheel controls just like before (you can even change what they do which is cool) and everything you had before.. only better.
AMA this was a 10/10 project and I would do it again in a heartbeat. The old 2015 head unit was absolute garbage. And that's where it went after the install.

Good timing. The doodad I needed from Amazon just arrived so I'm about to put it all back together

here you go:
current mess; you can see its just 3 pieces though, vents, head unit, ac fascia
here's what i was talking about with the bracket. ridiculous everyone says they don't fit. i know the replacement is lighter-weight so the 4 clips might hold it in place but if you can secure it with a bracket as well, why not? note how only one screw 'fit' but the other 3 are helping to lock the bracket in place even though they don't fit the original holes.
here you see the bracket fit is perfectly aligned for those 2 screws to secure it back to the car
$12 Red Wolf adapter that i was waiting on and what it connects to to regain all USB ports in the car
just plug the other end into one of the extra female USBs provided by the new unit
One of the 75 themes you can set for home page
Android auto
Finished product (the glare is from the protective screen film i haven't removed yet)
The second USB coming from the unit i don't know what to do with at the moment. just leaving it exposed in the glovebox for now.
oh forgot one important detail. you need to remove the TOP piece of trim from the AC controls because the new head unit has a thinner, integrated piece in order for the larger 9" screen to fit and you'll 'lock' the brackets from the AC fascia **BEHIND** the new head unit. very important you do this *BEFORE* you shove it back in because you can't put the ac cover back if you don't. I'm holding the old trim piece in my hand and pointing to where it was originally, you can just throw it in the garbage when done.

Perfect timing. My wife's Suby head unit just crapped out, and I was not looking forward to buying a new one.
