Is Apple creating a Tech Gap with FaceID?

Android makers are balking at copying Face ID.

Before this turns into the typical fanboy flamewar, I'm looking to discuss the general direction of phones rather than Apple vs. Android. I think competition is good for both sides, for example everyone adding under screen fingerprint scanners is good progress.
A few months back in an iPhone X thread I wondered if Apple's play with FaceID was to get app developers working with Augmented Reality technology. Then for the iPhone Xs or X1 you put the camera tech on the front too and have a great Augmented Reality phone with a decent stable of apps at launch. I'm sure Google and Samsung would follow Apple here even if it meant $1000 phones, but I don't think the budget Android makers would follow as evidenced but the article here.
So, if this is Apple's play, is a very good AR enabled phone enough for them to become "innovators" again and have something that people want that most other phones don't have? Would Apple going this direction open the window for Google's Pixel to make some gains? After all, the ultimate use of AR is overlaying data where appropriate in the real world, something that should play to Google's strength.

Android manufacturers have decided that recreating the 3D facial recognition used by iPhone X is simply too costly to include, and are instead focusing on implementing Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint scanners.
The report says that including an Infrared depth-sensing facial recognition system like the iPhone X is simply too expensive for Android smartphones to offer, which cannot command the same price premiums as Apple’s iPhones.
This is a combination of hardware and software development costs. Digitimes claims the cost of the TrueDepth 3D sensors in iPhone X peaked at $60 per unit, an incredibly high proportion of the overall phone cost if accurate.
Android makers are also worried about possible patent infringement from adopting Infrared dot projector systems. Instead, they have turned to in-display fingerprint sensors as their next-generation of device authentication.

I'd rather pay $100 less and not have that feature, regardless of the manufacturer. How is it possibly an improvement when you're already holding the phone in your hand and fingerprint scanners work instantly?

i had faceID on my old nexus4 but there's nothing less attractive than looking down at your phone and seeing your ugly-arse face so i opted for the PIN instead.
not sure which version of android but it was several years old at least.

I much prefer Face ID over fingerprint. Too many times I would have cracked or worn skin on my thumb and it wouldn’t work well. Face ID works great all of the time for me.

My s9+ has face recognition and an iris scanner.

I can open my phone with a single swipe up, I love it

Is it so much of a hassle to type in a 4 digit code? Jesus Christ.

Yes. IIRC about half of iPhone users didn't have a passcode at all on their phone before TouchID came out.

I did that too but it’s aggravating to try to open the phone with your thumb, get denied then have to do it over again with another finger. With Face ID I just look at the phone, swipe up and Face ID unlocks the phone almost immediately, as if it’s not even there, and I’m ready to go. Yes, sometimes if I’m in bed it doesn’t recognize due to the angle I’m holding the phone from, but I have way less denials than with Touch ID. I’m not saying that it’s the end all be all, but for my use it is far superior to Touch ID.

You didn’t have faceID, you had a different form of facial recognition. FaceID is extremely interesting tech, while it isn’t as useful as some other things for unlocking a phone, it’s nice to see people going after that level of facial IK. It would be really useful having that small of tech incorporated with a HMD to give facial expressions to avatars in VR and AR.

I feel like I posted this to the OT and not the Tech Board the way everyone thinks I’m talking about authentication technology. Google had a phone like what I'm thinking Apple is aiming at, Project Tango LINK , but it was ahead of it's time. You need apps for the new tech to get used.

My LG v30 has face recognition and it works great for what I want
For anything more advanced like payments, I'm fine sticjing to fingerprint or password

Even Apple understands that the $1000 phone experiment wasnt very successful. The updated iPhone X will be around 899.

Fingerprint scanner on the back of the pixel is the best. Your finger is pretty much on it when you pick the phone up and it's unlocked instantly. I don't see a need for facial recognition

istr apple got lots of heat for removing this (or was it the pixel2?). my son has a pixel and i have to say its a very well implemented and useful feature.

I'm all for facial recognition as an unlock. When I'm running and my hands get sweaty, I hate having to type in my passcode after my thumb fails a few times.
