Should I make an insurance claim through att, bring it somewhere to be replaced, or try to replace it myself. My concern would be that att would send a refurbished phone as replacement. Any input or past experience with this is appreciated.

If you bring it somewhere to be replaced your phone will be refurbished, if you fix it yourself your phone will be refurbished. So, I don't see the difference.

x2 - And it will be refurbished by the original seller/insurance co.

If you make a claim they send you a different phone. May be a different color. May have more gigs. May be the exact same. I did a claim on my daughters white 64g and she got a black 256g back. Ask me how fun that was

Just do whatever is easiest or cheapest.

Pretty sure if you get a screen yourself or have someone install then it's the same as being refurbished.

I would recommend the insurance claim. The likelihood of a problematic screen on replacement is higher on any of the X or newer phones. Additionally, the grounding clips in the XR are a butch to deal with. With Asurion who supplies the replacement devices, they have a 30 day policy if there is an issue with the refurbished device (which happens) If a repair can’t be completed. On occasion I have even seen them provide a barns new phone.

Overall, replacement through insurance has less chances of bad outcomes.

Are you saying you didn't back it up before you sent it off? Or did she melt because she got a phone with more memory and different color?

I'm assuming it was a lot of fun since she got an objectively better phone back. That is unless she was upset that the color of the back of the phone that is covered by her case and rarely sees the light of day was different.
