Sounds like your battery went bad somehow.

One other thing you could try.. is try using a different charger cord and plug..

I know it sounds crazy if the other one you are using looks like it's working.. but just try it if you can.

Most likely you need to replace your battery though.

I'm having the exact same issue and of course my warranty expired about a week ago. Any chance Apple will fix it if it is a known design flaw?

I have an iPhone 6 and mine has done this a few times. It doesn't do it every single time it gets low but about once a week it will go dead with ~ 20% power remaining and won't come back on until plugged in with some how the same battery % that was on when it went out.

I ran into this with my Note4. Just get a battery off of amazon, pop the back off and swap them out.

Oh wait...

Mine started doing this right after the IOS 10 update. Did a restore and battery life is a little better but it still doesn't last more than about 5 hours.

Update on my case. I called Apple expecting to be given the run around and asked to pay some ridiculous fee. They are actually gonna ship me a brand new replacement (or refurb not sure) and take back the broken phone at no charge (they do place a hold until they get the broken phone back). I'm ten days outside my warranty period so maybe they use a grace period or they are finally realizing there is a design flaw.

I do find it odd they said the battery passed the diagnostic test but are replacing the phone. But I'm a happy camper and I recommend calling if anyone else is having the same issue.

Mine just shut down with 40% on the battery meter and I had to plug it in to get it to restart. The good thing is I got the shipping notice that my 7+ Will be here Thursday.

If the phone is still under Apple's 1 year warranty I would definitely contact Support, most likely your battery is going bad and they'll replace it for you.

The key word there is "passed". Batteries degrade over time or can even swell up and explode due to manufacturing defects; it's a fact of life. Replacing the battery might have fixed the problem. Obviously manufacturers with designs that don't allow the user to easily replace their own batteries don't want to emphasize this limitation. The design is what I call built-in obsolescence. They are betting that the battery will last long enough until you replace the phone with a new phone. We tend to keep stuff of years so it's not a good bet for our type of user which is why we buy or build stuff we can fix ourselves.
