I'm ready to step up my home theater audio system.....

I have been hearing that Dolby Atmos sounds amazing with the proper home theater audio setup. With a little bit of browsing, I came across this receiver, which has really good reviews. So, say I get that particular receiver. My next must have is going to have to be some higher end surround sound speakers (preferably in-ceiling type due to the way my theater room walls are set designed). Can I get some good recommendations on speakers that would make these new HD audio formats sound the best? I prefer to try to stay under $300.00 per pair. As you can see, I currently have some cheap satellite speakers installed (rear speakers not pictured).

You will not even begin to fill that room with sound with a $300 pair of speakers.

I was talking about “per” pair. Not just a single pair. I’m considering 3 pair and a center channel (already have 2 subwoofers) for 7.2 channel surround.

What Marco said.
I'd also be looking at a projector and screen. That screen is smallish for a 9 seat theater.

Well that just isn't true.

I thought atmos speakers had to be pointed at the ceiling.
From an audio standpoint, in-ceiling mounting is not ideal, though that’s what I have at home.

That's the strangest setup I've ever seen. WTF goes on in there? Why'd you buy so many chairs?
The cheapest Best Buy receiver is stepping up your game?

As for the tv, this picture just doesn’t do it justice. That’s a 75” Sony Bravia X850E Series, and it’s honestly plenty big enough to view clearly from the back row of chairs. I decided to go with 3 rows of 9 chairs because I enjoy having people over for LSU and PPV sporting event showings, and I prefer that we are all comfortable when they watch them. I’m not wanting to spend over a grand for a receiver at the moment, and being that this particular receiver is $300 off its original price, it has gathered my interest. I’m sorry I’ve not yet hit OT Baller status like you, but with high hopes, I will one day.

Actually for Atmos, you want speakers in the ceiling or above you pointed down. There are floor standing Atmos speakers that fire upwards, but not as as effective. Even with Atmos you still need floor level speakers.
If I was the OP I'd concentrate on getting a solid receiver then get 2 good front left&right speakers, center channel and a subwoofer. Then as your budget allows fill out the surround and height speakers. A good 3.1 system can still make a huge impact on the home theater experience. I'd say 75% of the audio come from those 3 front speakers and sub anyway.
I've heard Atmos and while it's good, I don't think it's game changing and only relevant to movies that have an Atmos soundtrack. I'd rather have fewer great speakers than many average speakers. I'm planning to upgrade my front speakers to some Martin Logan ESLs later this year.

has anyone ever actually downloaded a 4K movie that retained the atmos track?
i can't imagine not having all my movies served from a hard drive in my basement.
i also cant remember the last time i held either a CD or DVD in my hands. i couldn't put my hands on a dvd player if i tried. i think maybe my son's xbox supports DVD and thats about it.

I do not have ot baller status so my current setup is
-Dennn 3400 receiver
-polk s35 as center
-polk s55 as left/right fronts
-polk owm5 mounted rears
-svs pb1000 sub
Polk speakers are on sale often. I believe I got the fronts for 550 (pair). 200 for the rears (pair) and 700 for the denon. Camelcamelcamel for Amazon and a little patience will go a long way.. next purchase will be the atmos speakers.

Are you sure you aren’t an OT baller? Those chairs are expensive as frick. How much did 9 set you back?

More than the audio system, that’s for sure.

Atmos adds more sound channels that comes from above you, such as rain falling or a helicopter flying overhead during a movie. Usually it’s a top left and top right setup, creating a 7.1.2 system, the 2 being the overhead speakers. With the right movie that has been mastered for Atmos sound it would be badass, but I don’t think that has to be a priority off the bat.
As another poster said, I would rather a nice 3.1 setup and then add surround later on instead of getting a cheaper system that can play Atmos sound for certain movies
And I agree it is a little odd to spend so much money for those 9 theater recliners that fill up the whole room

While the chairs are comfortable, they certainly aren’t top of the line. I managed to score each chair off of Walmart.com this past fall for about $160.00 each on clearance (they ended up selling out on the site days later for about $90.00 each). They recline straight back and have wide enough cup holders for drinks that sit in yeti/rtic style cups/koozies. I have young kids, so I wasn’t going to spend $500+ per chair at this time.

It is true...keep in mind, it’s a theater, which means that the mains will see many periods of low volumes, but when they need to, will be asked to produce very high SPLs...a very small pair of bookshelf is all that will fit into that budget, and a very small pair of bookshelf speakers will not fill that room with sound.
Also remember, 90% of the sound will be coming out of 3 speakers (LCR). The rears are just an effect channel.

Atmos is a gimmick in my opinion. Why bounce sound waves off a wall when you can just have a speaker? The sellers of A/V receivers just needed something new to market.

What if the speakers are in the ceiling ?
Also if it is a gimmick it’s more about the movie studios than the AVR companies. AVR are full of features these days if anything there is too much to market.

If you are going with an Atmos setup, in order for it to provide a proper imaging, you would have to have front, center and side speakers in addition to a minimum left and right "height" speakers which would be over the middle of the listening area. With some savvy online purchasing you can buy your speakers for a lot less than you might think. My speaker setup cost me a little less than 450 bucks if I remember correctly, and that includes the Onkyo powered sub. If you go after name brand for your satellite speakers, yeah, you will easily spend over 1000 bucks. If you know what you are looking for, you can save a ton of money. I used Speakecraft in wall/ceiling speakers for my satellites. They look and sound awesome. You can look at the construction and read the reviews. They are very well made, of very comparable materials to the top brands. Once they are installed, you can call them Klipsch or Polk if you want, lol.
