My Macbook Air needs a new charging port and they won't get the part for 3-5 business days and then with Christmas its gonna be like 10 days until I get it back so I bought a Chromebook from Wal-Mart to use until its repaired.

My original plan was just to use it as a "loaner" and then return it once I got my Macbook back, wal-marks doesn't even charge a restocking fee, but I think I may keep this just as a internet device since the wi-fi works better on my patio than the wi-fi on my Macbook. I know, CSB, but if anyone needs a $200 internet machine this thing is pretty impressive.

Done. I had a customer send me an excel spreadsheet today and I was able to handle it in google drive so I think you should be good. Anything you need to do on the internet is fine, I am sure pictures will be fine as well but I haven't used them yet. Besides Photoshop and Office, which Google Drive can handle, this device is pretty cool. I am a HUGE apple guy but unless you need specific programs this thing would work for any college kid.

I just got it this morning, and it IS NOT a
MacBook, but so far it is serviceable. Check back with me in a few days and I will report and issues but it worked fine today.

I understand it can't RUN the programs. But I need a real objective opinion of whether or not it can serve the purpose of surfing the Internet, writing papers and making presentations.

Hard to really know without playing around with one

No chance, unless I go broke and can't afford Apple. Like I said, its no Macbook Air, but for $200 you can do pretty much anything that doesn't require a program like CAD or Photoshop.

The top Android phones are still in the same price range.

Do you need to sign into Google to use it, or can you just turn it on and start browsing the web?

It absolutely can.

Like 480 said, you will have no trouble with most student stuff. Actually, I think if people made use of all the Google services and apps the majority of people could get by on a chrome book/box alone.

Nope. You can browse as a "guest". You just don't have any access to drive, docs, etc.

Or for people who know they are only going to use a specific machine for derping out and watching youtube. Chromebook is perfect for those applications and doesn't require a $2500 investment.

Im on mine right now, It's pretty much all I use around the house. It's light, comes on as soon as you open it, and get's really good browsing speeds.

One thing that is overlooked is the fact that Google autoupdates daily, which in turn means this thing has not lost any browsing speed since I picked it up in August.I have the Toshiba one and I have been 100% satisfied with the purchase.
