Prefer it over my macbook.air for browsing hands down.

I'm recommending one as a gift my son wants to give. But what makes the browsing so much better?

the 1080p display mostly, its just a beautiful machine. the macbook air looks dull in comparison. the trackpad is just as good and the audio is far superior. startup is also incredibly fast (obviously).

my model is this one from toshiba - i got it for $249 over black friday at best buy

I know I can't download non Google applications and is cloud based but are basic things like Skype compatible? I'm looking into the 11.5' Samsung chromebook.

Skype is not supported, but hangouts is just as serviceable.

Alright I have been using it for a few days and have a few more things to add. It is serviceable for the internet as long as you only have a couple tabs open and aren't doing anything else. For example if I try to post on here while playing a youtube video it lags a bit, not bad but it isn't what I am used to. Also, if you have other tabs open and then open FB it gets REALLY slow, especially if you try to play embedded videos on FB. If you don't have anything else open then its fine but I guess it doesn't have the memory to handle that much.

As far as documents it is fine, google drive has worked for any excel docs I have had to edit. I don't create excel docs though besides very basic ones, I mostly just edit and then save them. Presentations are fine.

I can say with confidence it will do what you said you needed, besides maybe elaborate spreadsheets but I still think Drive can handle that. The only concern I see is you are getting it for a college kid and they might get frustrated with the lack of speed on FB and some other video when you have other tabs open but thats pretty much it, with just one tab its great though.

Like I said I got the samsung so yours is different but I disagree with all of that. My MacBook Airs Retina display is light years better, it is WAY better for browsing since it can handle as many tabs as I want with multiple video going, the audio is better on the MB, the startup is about the same and the MacBook track pad is also WAY better.

For a college kid maybe but everyone in the business world uses Skype, most don't use hangouts.

2GB of RAM I'm assuming. Chrome likes memory. Videos are probably an issue because the integrated video of the Celeron (i'm assuming) is gonna struggle to play 1080p video. Chromebooks are internet machines for the most basic of basic shite. I'd never recommend one for a college student.
