I have an IPad that belonged to my late aunt. Don’t know the password to unlock it. How can this device be made useful again?

Forget about unlocking it, they don’t do that. I don’t remember the exact steps for it, but google recovery mode and you can do an entire wipe of the device and use it with a new account.

This will work for PASSCODE lock only. If here iCloud account is tied to it, the iPad is a nice paperweight if you don't know her login info

Yeah if it is locked to her iCloud account you can forget it. That is just an expensive paper weight. Depending on what version of iOS it is on you might be able to jailbreak it and get in that way. Also there are some unlocking services out there that can retrieve the passcode but that won't do anything for the icloud account. Probably would not be cost effective either.

Tried to wipe it without success. Went to Apple Store. No help there. It’s linked to an iCloud account and I don’t have the password

You have to contact apple support at 1800myapple and be patient its a long process by design.

I had to do this with an IPhone once-

The ICloud account unlock I mean.

It's a brutal process. Have to submit original purchase receipt, maybe a picture of the box it came in, and the blood of your first born child.

It's a PITA but it can be done.

Three years ago? Probably close to obsolete

Yep. It can be done. We have at least 10 phones of past employees in our IT Dept that they use as paperweights.

They won't unlock with out original proof of purchase.

I get why kind of, but damn they can use a little common sense sometimes as well.
