Probably a dumb question but I’ve never changed carriers before so idk. Considering a change from Verizon to ATT. Obviously want to keep my same number. Do I cancel Verizon first and then go to ATT or other way around ?

Go to the new carrier and tell them you want to switch. They'll walk you through it.

If you want to minimize downtime, other way around.

Just go to AT&T, they'll be happy to help you port your number over.

Though personally AT&T will never get another dime from me.

They did everything for me when I switched from ATT to Verizon then to Verizon to Tmobile. If you have a 5G phone go to Tmobile and skip ATT, they all suck, but Tmobile sucks the least.

I’ve honestly never had any issues with Verizon. Bottom line is I work in the gulf and att and T-Mobile recently added 4G LTE coverage to large portions of the gulf thru partnerships with offshore communications providers and Verizon doesn’t have shite out there. For the area I work in, the people with att have more coverage than the T-Mobile guys so that seems to be the way to go

This will be vague because it's been awhile.

Basically you'll need a number from your current carrier. That may be a account number. I forget. That's the main thing. Once you have that number you can set up everything else in store.

I switched to ATT aswell. No complaints.

Go to the new carrier and they will put in a request to port your phone number to them.

Why the switch? To save money, or to get better service?

I personally, have had T-Mobile since I got my first cell phone. I have a great deal (6 phones with unlimited everything for $120/month), so it is unlikely that I will switch. Even when T-Mobile was considered terrible, I happened to live in places where it was decent - good enough for me and I was saving too much money to switch.

Att and T-Mobile have 4G in the gulf oil field as of a few months ago. Verizon does not. I spend 6 months out the year out there so I might as well have service. Other than that, I’ve had no problems with Verizon ever

Makes sense for why you would want to switch. As others have said, you can go to AT&T and they will basically do it for you, walk you through it. It has been several years since I have done it, but you will most likely want to bring a recent bill with you or have the ability to log into your Verizon account while talking to them.

When I made the change from AT&T to Verizon they did everything for me, but needed my account # and cell # to switch me over. But, that was around 10 years ago.

Do NOT cancel with your old carrier first. You won’t be able to keep your number.

Bring your phone number, account number, and account pin to the new carrier. They will handle it all from there. Your old account will automatically cancel once you activate with the new carrier. You’ll just get a final bill from the old carrier.

Going through this right now. New carrier needs account number and port PIN from old carrier.

That’s pretty much it. Need to have your (new) phone ready to switch. Some carriers need to switch the SIM card, but that can be done at a local store

ETA: As others have said, DO NOT cancel your old service until you have successfully switched to the new one and everything works.

The final bill should just be for the final month of service, correct? I own my phone outright and am not currently locked into a contract with Verizon.

Do you have exceptionally bad service from Verizon?

AT&T seems to be a poor choice regardless of the service.

All of the advice in here is good.

One thing I can add is if you are in the same area code, DONT let the sales rep tell you that you can’t transfer your number over. They are just being lazy AF.

There is FCC governance over it.

Set aside a chunk of time. It took a while for it to finish in the store when we switched from ATT to Verizon, but we were also getting new phones. They gave us like $300 each in trade for our old phones for switching carriers, so you might want to explore that if it's close to time for a new phone.

As some have mentioned, we needed a PIN for the ATT account, which we had no idea what it was. We had to call ATT from the store and go through rigamorole to get a new PIN. Best to handle that before you go to the store.

Update: I made the switch today. Went to ATT and they were able to get all the info they needed from my Verizon app on my old phone. Couldn’t have been easier switching over. And I upgraded phones while I was at it
