I have a Home Mini, and I don't really use it much. But I also haven't really integrated it with any plugs or the thermostat or anything. I should maybe do that. It's a neat gadget though.

I have both and use them equally. They both have their strengths. If you have kids they'll love either.

You can say hey google, broadcast message and it will send the message to al of your google homes.
amazon's intercom is a better product at the moment.
you say 'drop in on henry's dot' and the dot turns GREEN and opens a live connection so you and the person with the dot at the other end can just talk to each other; not to all dots. when you're done, just say 'alexa cancel' and if the dot is within sight, you can tell the connection is closed because its no longer pulsing green.
we have a big house with all the bedrooms at one end (4 kids) and my son has a basement bedroom so we'd never get all the kids to dinner at the same time without this.
eta amazon echo dots have been $29 at Target, Walmart, Home Depot and I'm not sure where else for like 3 weeks now so I don't think they're going this 'in response' to google dropping their price.

Simply pointing out it’s more novelty than utility at this point.
Save your easily triggered hysterics for when someone invades your safe space, snowflake.

I’m pretty good at all these things. Does this device somehow do it better?

yep. i can tell my dot to dim my lights or change white level so i can see what i'm doing at the kitchen island or to start/stop/change playing music on my sonos setup or turn the pool pump on since its going down to 19 degrees tonight and i dont want the pipes to freeze and i dont want to traipse 200 feet down a wet cold hill in the dark to my pool and fumble around turning it on.
my wife got in a bind moving a bed and called down to my son to come help her without having to drop the bed and physically go find him. we have a 4,200sf house and he's in a basement bedroom at the other end so she could have gotten hurt if he hadn't been able to come help her just by her using her voice.
my 3yo called me at work the other day 'call from alexa' and that was a conversation i'll cherish the rest of my life. he was as amazed he could call me as i was getting the call.
quick: how many tablespoons in a cup? how many cups in 1/2 gallon? its easier to ask alexa than try & look up the conversion somewhere.
don't blame us because you're old and set in your ways.

likewise. an echo and 2 dots (not counting the one my son is getting for christmas). i play spotify premium and amazon prime through it. i'm not sure what the difference is with home and echo but i'm very happy with echo.

It's a little of both. If you fully immerse yourself in it and set up your entire home, it's a neat gadget that is functional. I , however, have only gotten one smart plug for mine, so it's mostly just a novelty. Even the kids have gotten a little bored with it.

things i use the dot for multiple times a day
- control music on my sonos speakers, turn the tv down from another room (its using a sonos soundbar), etc
- timers.
- intercom. 4 kids and without an intercom we're literally running all over the house just to ask a simple question
- lights/smarthome. even though most of my house triggers lights via schedules and sensor triggers, there is ALWAYS something you need to do manually and its great to be able to make that happen no matter where you are or where you left your phone

Yeah he can speak for himself. It's way more than a novelty at my household. But i use my GH's full potential.

Indeed. I admit I haven't fully embraced it yet, which I probably should. I can see its functionality. I mostly use it for quick Google searches and to stream music, but the speaker itself sucks for that.

Can Echo control lights, t.v., thermostat and other things around the house?

yes assuming you have some type of smart light installed. even the weirdo chinese wifi lightbulbs work with alexa

thermostat
yup, all of them that support wifi

t.v.
depends on what you want controlled but yes/kinda

its synced with my corporate outlook account so when i ask alexa what does my day look like it runs through all my meetings and tells me the weather, etc. so 'other things' is a broad category. i can have my dot find my phone, intercom any other dot in the house and all kinds of local/gps related stuff

I'd love to get the Sonos soundbar, but I'm not paying $700 for it.
Right now, I just cast it to my Chromecast through the TV that's hooked up to the soundbar.

I purchased two Nest Cams today and got two Home Minis for free.
Nest is running a special that for every Nest item over $99 you buy, you get a free home mini. (Obviously Google is running this promotion since they own everything but you get the idea.

How hard is it to install a Nest thermostat? My current thermostat is probably 20 years old. Wonder if it's compatible. Guess I can check tonight. Could use another Mini and had been thinking about getting a Nest anyway.

I don't have one but I've heard they are super easy.

Need to make sure your current thermostat is using a C wire. If not you may have some issues. Echobee has an adapter for this but the Nest would require a jumper or something. There's youtube videos for installing w/o the C wire.

hmmmmmmmm my wife loves Amazon and I love Google. I want the Google home mini, but I know she's going to want the dot.
