Getting texts from ATT saying my phone will not work come February

I have a Motorola G6 phone that works perfectly. ATT says my phone will not work on their network once they shut off 3G in February. My preferred network setting on my phone is LTE, which I believe is 4G. So why would my phone no longer work once 3G is turned off? Can someone explain this to me?

Do you ever actually see 4G or LTE on your phone… or does it act like you are always in a 3G area?

I'm pretty sure they are lying and just trying to get people to buy new phones because like you said it makes no sense.

From Phone Arena

Now, AT&T has made it much easier for those who were on the fence. You can access a long list (first spotted by XDA) that shows exactly which phones will keep working after the 3G networks are shut down. If your device isn't on the list, you probably need to upgrade.

They did this to one of my kid's phone. They will eventually send you the shittiest phone they have for free.

The company I work for uses Verizon/Sprint and we are having to replace all our current phones because they are fading out 3G.

Yes, I often see LTE on my phone
My phone is just a plain Moto G6, not a G6 Play or a G6 Forge.

They are trying to get rid of unlocked phones

Just because you normally see LTE, see if the display switches to 3G when you are on a call. That's the phone-killer.

They sent me a $20 motorola and claimed it was a sufficient replacement and refused to work with me in any way.
Ended up moving over to T-mobile

Thanks for this info. My phone does switch to an H when I am making a call. What does the H mean?

HDSPA I believe. You need to have HD Voice (VoLTE) for your phone to continue to work. If your phone doesn't show LTE when you are on a voice call, your phone will not work when 3G gets switched off.
I had a phone (Moto G5 Plus) that would do VoLTE. Every other provider except At&t would provision the phone for VoLTE with no issues but at&t refused to provision the phone for VoLTE so I had to change phones.

Same here. Said screw AT&T and switched to Xfinity mobile.

AT&T is so awful that their entire marketing campaign right now is all about how they finally give existing customers the same deal as new customers and "it's not complicated". Well frick me. It only took you a century and a fricking half to figure out how not to frick loyal customers and that nobody likes complicated pricing schemes?
frick AT&T.
