I don't think we're talking about the same thing. Xbox Media Player (Kodi) absolutely supported DivX. That's all I used to do was download DivX files to my Windows XP machine, share the folder over SMB, and then hit play on Xbox Media Player (Kodi) on my original Xbox.

And Xbox Media Player (Kodi) didn't require any built-in codec support in the OS from Microsoft, everything was done themselves.

maybe.
i remember using the 'windows media player' built into the xbox (not the spin-off version) and i had all my movies on a Windows Home Server and could never get it to play about 75% of the movies due to it not supporting the CODEC.

even WMP wouldn't play it although VLC would.

i had to download a speical codec pack and then it was just a downward spiral of crap on my PC that started making it run slow.

it was the 'automagical' aspect of finding and updating my shared library that never ever worked (or maybe for 10 minutes) and i abandoned the whole thing eventually.

HEY, where are the movies?

me - you have to look for the kodi app and type in the passcode (so my 2yo isn't ordering $10 movies)

HEY, where do i go in kodi?

me - go to 'plug ins' under 'video' and look for 'exodus'

HEY, i tried to voice search for a movie and it took me back to amazon home screen

me - give me the remote.

-time passes-

ok, here are some movies for you.

HEY, i clicked the movie and its taking forever.

me - i know, its busy looking for sources.

HEY, i clicked the source and now i have a pop-up to "open my external device and type in this URL to view"

me - hit ignore and just wait while it slowly works its way through the FREEDDDP and VIDEONE and whatever the hell else is listed until a stream actually works.

HEY, the movie is working!

me - wow, its stunning in standard def quality; walks out of room.

See, I don't recognize any of that. You're talking about streaming again, but I thought you just said it wasn't the tipping point. Local playback in Kodi is fast, seamless, high quality, etc. UI is simple, at least for playback.

That's just a button on my universal remote, same one I use in WMC, BD player, some apps in my ATV4 (not Netflix, dammit), etc.

I'm talking about Kodi. Kodi first came out in 2002 and used to be called "Xbox Media Player" and only ran on the original Xbox console if you installed a modchip in it to allow you to run non-Microsoft software and pirate games. When the original Xbox became outdated, they found themselves with a really robust awesome media center application with no hardware to run it on, so they started porting it to other platforms and renamed it Kodi since it wasn't an Xbox-only thing anymore.

This is what Kodi aka Xbox Media Player looked like in 2002:

So you're bragging about Comcast not knowing what you're streaming in one breath but not admitting that you download torrent files for this to work?

Way to cherry pick to cover up any holes in your strategy

Unrelated, but while we're on the subject of ISPs, another advantage to Plex is that once you have the content, you don't have to worry about using up bandwidth to watch stuff.

I don't have a bandwidth cap (I'm on Cox business) but there are certain shows I watch over and over (like It's Always Sunny) and it's way better to stream them locally from a box in my office than to constantly stream the same thing over and over again from a provider like Netflix.

Oh, that does sound pretty slick

Yeah, there's some really neat software out there.

I use Sonarr (TV shows), CouchPotato (movies), and SABnzbd (downloader) to keep my Plex server stocked. I don't torrent, but I subscribe to a usenet host. I also subscribe to a usenet index.

Once you get it all set up, I don't think there's a more seamless viewing experience. All of your shows just appear in Plex when ready, and you don't have to sift through any trash or do any searches. CouchPotato is smart enough to wait until the Blu-ray comes out before grabbing a movie (you can override of course) so it's a very rare occasion to get a poor quality rip.

It's like Netflix for everything.

Even with Estuary.

I can't make heads or tails of that skin. I went back to confluence and its much easier for me. But I still use Exodus/Covenant to stream tons of stuff and the streams are as good as they were a year ago.

I can't comment on the streaming stuff you guys use, but the idea behind Estuary is to try to put the stuff you're most interested in on the front page. What's shown is determined by the item that is selected on the left side menu, and that vertical menu is just like the horizontal menu in Confluence. I haven't looked at Confluence in a looooong time, but I believe the later versions show a limited amount of similar items above its main menu.

Does Plex, a paid program, facilitate downloading from torrents or whatever for permanent storage?

Official Plex doesn't support downloading anything more than metadata and subtitles for media you already own. Very important distinction. It also does this as a free program, not a paid one.

Doesn't sound like he ever attempted to use Kodi for local playback. It's as easy as Plex for that, you don't have to go into addons.

If his family can't figure out how to play streaming files either, I weep for his future. My grandma can do that shite and she can barely remember anything.

I didn't expect anything different. I was just trying to understand where CAD was coming from.

Is there any free client besides the PC one? I've found no reason to use it on my PC over Kodi for local playback. I've always considered it a rather unnecessary fork of XBMC for that purpose. However, I do use Plex for streaming to my mobile devices, where the clients cost, and that's why I think of Plex as a "paid app".

Plex server runs on a PC.

Plex clients are free. I have them on my phone, firetv/android box and built into Vizio. All free.

Eta there is a Plex pass product you can subscribe to that charges a monthly fee but whatever it does isn't something I use apparently.

Probably remote access to your shows but I just want to stream them at Max quality to devices on my home network.

All the Plex clients are useful for is casting.

I use Netflix when I'm on the road with kids.

I have no desire to watch a Blu-ray rip on my phone but let the kids watch cartoons on long car drives

It's free on all the streaming boxes, but the phone apps are paid. I think it's either $5 to unlock, or it unlocks with Plex Pass.

I just use the web app on my phone.

Yes, it does.

You have to buy the clients for mobile devices to enable streaming from a Plex server. I paid $4.99 each for Plex on my iPhone and Fire tablet. You're right about the apps on non-mobile devices.

Plex: Free vs Paid

Again, I don't see any point to using Plex for playback over Kodi on a PC, which is the hub of my entertainment system for both storage and playback. Plex does make sense when you have a bunch of streamer boxes or TVs you want to serve from a PC.

I think I understand now you were trying to use independent Kodi installations for every TV in your house, and yeah, Plex is a better choice for that. Kodi could do it, but as Kodi isn't client/server, every device would have its own database, which is suboptimal.

Plex is useful for keeping a nice stock pile of things you like to rewatch and be able to access from mobile devices and such.

I rather Kodi for one watch type situations. I don't see why we need to put our eggs in one basket like CAD seems to want to do. Why not use them all?

If that's your preference, then have at it.

Myself, I'd like as close to a seamless and cohesive entertainment setup as possible. Being a cord-cutter, that's not really possible just yet, but I'm not going to throw another interface in there when I don't need to.

I already regularly switch between Plex, Netflix, Prime, Sling, and Tablo, so my eggs are already in 5 baskets . I'm not about to throw Kodi in there too, especially since our primary TV has a Roku and I can't put Kodi on it anyway.

So, Kodi isn't available on Roku, the UI doesn't match Plex IMO, and it doesn't give me anything extra that I can't get with the others. It would just be an unnecessary added complexity for me.

But, if you like it, use it. It's great to have options.
