kodi is a clusterfrick and its a constant game of chasing the good sources and stuttering videos and wtf else is going to break and why is exodus down and maybe exodus is dead and some other plug-in is now ok and OMIGOD they're offline now and pay $1.99/mo and your HD sources will come back but only if you install xyz VPN WTF GTFO.

plex is a sea of serenity and all movies play in 1080p or better, silky smooth and best of all, OFFLINE so comcast isn't snooping my streams.

goodbye failed kodi experiment.

not sure, i know plex works on iphone, android, chromecast, vizio smart apps, roku and amazon fire tv & stick.

not sure about ps4 but it seems like there should be a client there as well.

sure. but at least once you have it you dont go to queue it up again for your kid the next day and find the HD stream is now gone like when you use exodus.

you're technically 'downloading' it when you stream it as well but then every time you go to watch it again you download it again and you never know if the decent HD stream is even there the next time.

everyone should have a good solid set of 1080p copies of star wars, pixar, ghilbi, james bond, star trek, game of thrones & LoTR on their local servers.

It's not really fair to compare streaming from piracy sites to local playback, but I am curious about one thing. Does Plex, a paid program, facilitate downloading from torrents or whatever for permanent storage? If so, why don't the Kodi plugins, which aren't official and can do anything they want? If not, then you must be procuring the content in other ways and could continue using Kodi.

This is why I never bothered with all the Kodi plugins. It's too much headaches from reliability, not to mention questionable video quality.

Don't get me wrong, I do use Kodi. There are a few files that Plex has problems with playing or sometimes when Plex updates there are bugs (I'm watching fringe content like 4K HDR BD rips with DTS Master Audio and Plex's support isn't always stable for that). Also when I'm watching 25fps content (e.g. BBC's Planet Earth II in 4K HDR) Plex has framerate judder, and Kodi doesn't, it handles it better. I also listen to a lot of hi-res and 5.1 music and Kodi handles that stuff better than Plex. So in those cases I just use Kodi and stream over SMB from my server.

But ultimately, Plex is my go-to. All movies and TV shows that I know I like, I download and put into my Plex. Anything that I'm watching on a whim or if I'm looking for something random to watch, I check Netflix and Amazon Prime video.

Plex has a plugin system but I don't know if anyone uses it for that. However, people use external programs like Slickbeard to automatically download and import movies/TV shows into Plex. Slickbeard bills itself as an "internet PVR" so basically you tell it what shows you watch, and it will automatically download new torrents of that show. So you could tell it to "record" Game of Thrones and every time a new episode airs, it will torrent it and import it into your Plex server automatically.

Way better than fiddling with Kodi plugins.

I agree Kodi has alot of issues, but that is the nature of the business. TerrariumTV has always been solid for me. Before streaming, I was a long time plex user.

you're not really asking why i don't use the kodi UX for my local media over plex are you?

ive noticed a few issues like that as well but i've solved them by using the transcode option in plex (can't remember what its called) set to 'original quality' and that fixes troublesome encodings on movies that won't play properly.

no idea what that's doing to the PQ but i do know its buttery-smooth once i let plex 'fix' it.

Kodi's great for local media, so sort of. Plex is for streaming to phones and tablets with transcoding as necessary. I would never use it over Kodi for local playback where I have a PC or Kodi box. What I don't understand is why streaming from piracy sites was the tipping point, and why Plex is the answer now that you're using local playback. I mean, if everything was fine with Kodi except for the streaming, now that you're using local playback, Kodi ought to be perfect.

it wasnt even close. in fact it was borderline pathetic.

a. i only had kodi working on my amazon fire tv hooked to our main tv.
b. kodi UX was unusable by anyone in my family but me.
c. plex is built-into every tv in my house by virtue of chreomcast sticks and is so easy me, my wife or my older kids can pick up any device handy and start the Jetsons or original Pink Panther cartoons for the little guy on any TV at any time with any phone or tablet that is handy. BONUS - plex is hard-coded into Vizio smart apps and amazon fire tv so its no harder than launching netflix on those TVs when a phone isn't handy.
d. plex UX is superb, easy, intuative and all my TVs play at original quality. nothing is transcoded.
e. daddy is the only one with access to the plex server to feed it new tv & movies that are specific to what my family wants to watch.
f. sonos works with plex so i'm excited to see how my massive music library looks inside plex as well.

in order for 4K HDR content to play on Plex you HAVE to do Direct Stream. Transcoding will frick it up. For example, if you have a file with fully supported video codec in 4K HDR but your audio is in a format that your player platform doesn't support and Plex needs to transcode the audio for compatibility, it will end up having to force transcode the video stream down to 1080p non-HDR. Not to mention Plex only supports 4K HDR in x265. If you import 4K content in x264 it will transcode it to 1080p upon playback. :(

I agree that Kodi is unreliable and overrated. I was very close to running down to the RedBox this weekend it took so many tries to get an adequate (not good) stream. That being said it works often enough that the convenience factor is too compelling. I'm not going back to managing DVD rips. Hopefully this bad August for the movie industry is a sign of their business model starting to break.

Ah, I should look at that. I haven't seen the Plex 10 foot UI in a few years.

it went like this:

HEY, how do i get to the movies again?

me from other room - grab the amazon fire remote

HEY, where are the movies?

me - you have to look for the kodi app and type in the passcode (so my 2yo isn't ordering $10 movies)

HEY, where do i go in kodi?

me - go to 'plug ins' under 'video' and look for 'exodus'

HEY, i tried to voice search for a movie and it took me back to amazon home screen

me - give me the remote.

-time passes-

ok, here are some movies for you.

HEY, i clicked the movie and its taking forever.

me - i know, its busy looking for sources.

HEY, i clicked the source and now i have a pop-up to "open my external device and type in this URL to view"

me - hit ignore and just wait while it slowly works its way through the FREEDDDP and VIDEONE and whatever the hell else is listed until a stream actually works.

HEY, the movie is working!

me - wow, its stunning in standard def quality; walks out of room.

HEY, how do I turn on subtitles?

me - :puts gun against temple, pulls trigger:

better than netflix. open plex, as you click over movies and tv shows you can even have it play the theme song. click movie and GO.

oh and theres a tiny gear at the bottom if you want to flip subtitles on/off or change audio from english to japanese.

I have used Kodi for 15 years now, ever since it was Xbox Media Player and I had a modded original Xbox in 2002, and I think the interface makes no sense in a lot of respects. Even with Estuary.

me too

i remember in horror trying to get ANY movie to play on the xbox since microsoft refused to support the divx codec (frickers!) and refreshing/enabling the windows media player library on a PC was about the most frustrating thing i can ever remember doing with a computer.

i wanted to claw my eyes out.
