Complete camera newb, so bear with me

Wife is wanting a nice (i.e. Better than her iPhone) camera now that we're married. Her brother has a Canon eos Rebel (I think a 6?) that she likes, so naturally we're drawn to that. Checking out amazon, I've seen some models for $700-$900+ for the camera alone, but I've also seen packages that come with lens, flashes, various accessories for $300-$500 range. My question is, are these legit? Obviously we're not professional photographers and don't need all the bells and whistles, but do want a nice camera to suit our (amateur) needs. Not to mention paying $400 and getting all the accessories in the package is better than $800 for just a camera. But at the same time, will the $400 package camera hold up, or is it so much of an entry level camera that we should steer clear?

Thoughts? Thanks

Go to Sam's and look there too. We bought our last Canon there and it came with either 2 or 3 lenses. We already had a nice lens from our first Canon. The differences between the packages you see and the camera only options are more features on the nicer camera. No need for that unless you're a pro. Spend about $350 and be happy with it.

It was good advice. Any Canon or Nikon package you can buy at Sam's or Costco or B&H which comes with two lenses will be a significant upgrade in your ability to take high quality photographs. In fact, since you and your wife are true amateurs, you won't likely utilize all of the capabilities of the entry level packages.

One feature which is worth the extra hundred for is the ability to electronically transmit images to your phone. Most of the entry level packages have this. It makes for the ability to shoot a high quality image and email it right away or put it on instagram, or whatever. It's a great feature.

And you can shoot HD home porn or baby videos, or whatever.

Avoid these. Quality of accessories is terrible. Just get the camera and two lens kit which you can get for $500 or less.

Make sure you wife really wants one, because my wife got one(a Nikon) 10 or so years ago and it's been sitting in a closet untouched for the last 9 or so.

Reach out to Competitive Cameras in Dallas TX. Old school brick and mortar/mom and pop type of place. One of the top camera dealers in the country, and only photography (with some video due to tech now).

They sell equipment to major pros (Nat Geo types), and that knowledge is essentially free of charge to the every day customer. Especially if you are a loyal customer.

Top Canon/Nikon/Olympus dealer. The type that gets 1 out of 3 in the US kind of piece. I'll never forget when they they got one of the only Nikon 600mms, and they had 2 customers race in. First one to the store got the opportunity to drop 10-15k on it. Ha.

Seriously give them a call. They may even give your wife a lesson over the phone. I know if yall were in visiting Dallas, and stopped by they would.

Oh and give them a call, and explain to them what you are wanting/needing. They don't do web commerce. They'll take the order over the phone or shoot them an email.

Start with a refurb

Yep. You can buy refurbs direct from Canon with a warranty. I've bought multiple refurb things from them and no complaints so far. Looks like they are having a 4th of July sale right now.

I was in a similar boat a few years ago; wife wanted a nice camera for baby/family pictures.

Had a friend that is a professional photographer and I followed his advice: whatever model/body fits your budget (we were looking at Nikon 7000 series), get the model a step lower and buy a quality lens. The more expensive bodies have features an amateur photographer will never use, but a quality lens and a few online lessons will make for some great pictures.

We got the Nikon D5300 and a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 lens. It has been a great camera, and the on board wifi allows us to get the pictures off the camera as soon as they are taken.

I’d look for a used Rebel or equivalent. Without fail one of two things happens with an entry level DSLR. You buy it and 1) get bored; or, 2) get hooked. Either way, the starter camera ends up in the closet within 6 months.

I wouldn’t get any of the packaged bundles either. If you want to keep it on the cheap, be sure to get the “nifty fifty”. At ~$100 nothing beats the 50mm f1.8. If you want a cheap zoom the 70-300mm f4-5.6 is a decent buy. You could probably get all three for ~$550-$650 at a site like fredmiranda.com. (I’ve bought/sold $25k+ without any problems on the site)
