65+ guy here. I have had Apple phones since they came out. My favorite has been the 6S. So that shows you what I like. I need decent speed, basic texting and internet use with interaction with document databases like courthouse records, government records with a decent camera. Want to pay under $400 and stay with ATT.
I really dislike apples constant updates which give me crap I don’t need or want and just doubles and changes the commands I was used to.
Should I go to an android or stick to an Apple. In either what model would you suggest. Ty is

Im 66 and use a Samsung Galaxy A16. It is cheap ($49.95) and simple to use. My advice, ditch the Apple. Plus if the rest of your family uses an Apple, then you can't be in the family groups/chat. Bonus....

Android does that too, except a Samsung will update differently than a Google Pixel, etc. You *do* need a phone that has current security updates, because they do protect you, and at your age, you are a prime target for scams. I'm still rocking an iPhone 13 from almost four years ago, and probably will until it stops getting security updates.
And don't confuse Apple updates with the updates pushed by the individual application developers (I don't know how many non Apple apps you use.) Individual app developers have to update their apps every two weeks to keep their "ranking" in the app store.
You may could try using a default browser other than Safari (Apple's) like Firefox, (I use Brave, but because it's so privacy focused, it may break some stuff that won't be obvious to you.)
I presume you're rolling in money, which is why you want to stay with ATT. There is no real reason not to use a service like one of the 24 MVNOs that use the AT&T network at far less cost.

I'm an android guy, but I'd tell you to stick with apple if thats what you know. Unless you feel like learning a whole new system. What is your current phone? And do you want the best iPhone you can get for $400?
Since you liked the 6S best, I didn't put any large iPhones. These are in mint condition, unlocked (so you can use them on any carrier), from reputable sellers, and 90%+ battery health. I've bought probably 5 phones off swappa and never had a problem.
$420 - iPhone 16e
$375 - iPhone 14
$270 - iPhone 13

If you get frustrated by Apple’s incremental updates, you’ll be apoplectic over having to learn an entirely new OS and incremental updates on Android.

I can learn a system but really hate them changing it too much. It’s the changing that I hate with Apple.

If you have a contract, cant you walk in and get a brand new phone free and just re-sign contract? The big carriers offer this I assume. Just go to a local att store, ask what they have. Tell them you want the newest phone in XL with their promotion or you going to another carrier.
