(Dumb) Question about digital antennas

So I've stopped using cable. Bought a Roku and have subscriptions to Sling TV and Netflix. I get the ESPNs and SECN with Sling.
Here's my question (and it's more just wanting confirmation): If I buy a digital antenna so I can get the local ABC, NBC, FOX, etc. affiliates, will I be covered for the football games that are broadcast on those stations? Basically, do the local affiliates always broadcast the national programming?

And don't buy any hype about 'digital' antennas being better. An antenna is an antenna. Just conductive metal with the proper connector. No special magic nor properties to being digital.

I currently live in an apartment and have not had much luck with digital antennas. Stations go in and out. could it be because I am in an apartment with trees in front of my porch?

The cable/satellite companies pay the local TV stations to rebroadcast their signal. The signal that you would get via antenna will be exactly what the TV station is sending out. The cable/satellite company may alter the signal (lower it from 1080p to 720p) before rebroadcast, so what comes from local may not always be what the cable/satellite company sends out.
The last sentence has a very different answer. Local affiliates are not always required to broadcast the national programming. An example of this would be the Saints Thursday night preseason game. In Baton Rouge it was broadcast on the local CBS station. Nationally, CBS aired Under The Dome. The BR station later showed Under The Dome (I think around 11, or midnight). However, it didn't matter if you were watching via antenna, Dish, Direct, Cox, or EATEL, you were getting the Saints game.

Could be anything, but most likely the walls of the apartment. Terrain and distance from the towers play a role. I can't pick up the local ABC station very well inside my house with an antenna, but pick it up great if I move the antenna outside. The CBS signal is spotty inside as well, but I can usually find the sweet spot by moving the antenna around.

But there is special magic to antennae like the Winegard Flatwave. Unamplified, and taped to a wall, I can get all the locals including CBS, which I could never do with the (amplified) Terk HDTVa.

I just got the Winegard Flatwave and I can catch every channel but CBS!! I need to get this remedied before football season.
ETA: I moved the antenna closer to the window and all is good now.

I've been thinking about getting a digital antenna for our games on ABC and CBS. The picture is so much better.
Is there a certain antenna I need to be able to get the broadcast without it being choppy? Like a certain strength?
I live 5 miles from downtown Birmingham where the stations are.

I live in Bham as well out 280 in Inverness, and the ABC signal is tricky for me. I think I remember reading they use the tower in Anniston from way back when they merged with the Tuscaloosa station, so we're a good 40-50 miles from the tower. I may be wrong on that. No problem with CBS.
I usually have to put my antenna outside to pick up the ABC signal. I don't have a rec for an antenna. I built mine with a 2x4 and wire coat hangers. It works better than any of the ones I bought.

I wanted to make sure if I get an antenna and can pick up CBS, that I will actually see the games broadcast on CBS. Sounds like I will.
