I know NOTHING about drones. nothing. i know they look neat and take some high resolution video. thats about it.

i have a friend who bought some acreage here in TN but who will still be living in miami for at least another year while he prepares for the move.

what i am wondering if its possible for him to 'host' a drone at a location nearby where he can send it out to 'walk' the property once a week or something remotely?

assuming the logistics work out (available location that is protected from the elements) is it possible to have a drone launched remotely to run a pre-determined course and land on its charger when done & transmit the video? he's already established there is wifi at the location.

i told him that sounded plausible but as with everything else on this board i'm talking out of my arse

what is the current state of drones? suggestions or is something like what i described even possible to do remotely?

TIA!

Possible yes.

Cost effective for Joe Blow? Maybe not.

Interesting application and also interested in the replies.
I'm only familiar with changing batteries as needed for a flight. Returning to a docking unit would be a great asset.
One other consideration would be inclement weather such as high winds, that will need to be factored into the flight ops.

With money not being an obstacle, sure you can do it. Skydio makes some autonomous drones with charging pads.

In the realm of possibility, yes. In the realm of his wallet, maybe not. Even if he has the coin to set this up, I'd set the O/U at 2 successful runs before a human has to intervene, i.e misaligned on charger, didn't check weather and crashed, hit something and crashed, camera jilted and needs adjustment, router needs to be reset, etc. etc.

This is correct. You pretty much have to maintain visibility of the drone at all times.

I'd take the under. I have a Roomba that can't run twice without some interaction and surely they've spent some effort in designing those things.

He's probably just hiring a company to come fly his area once a week.

There are a couple systems out there that are fully autonomous on both flight and charging capabilities, but there's only one that I'm aware of that has a FAA waiver for BVLOS operation.

The waiver is still very specific about your location and surrounding area, but theoretically could work in some cases. Good luck on this being affordable right now though. If I had to guess it would be a monthly payment type service.

Why is he stuck on drones performing this function?

Surely there’s many other ways for him to accomplish what he actually wants to do. If it’s just visual on the property, trail cams are cheap and efficient. If for some reason he needs the aerial view and control, there’s lots of drone survey companies that would likely be affordable for this type of thing.

Reolink go pt would be a much better option than a trail cam.

Too bad they sold out of these and no plans to sell anymore. I missed the boat, and I'm kicking myself.

I know! If it's half as good as their robot vacuum, that would be awesome!

Do you live near the property ?
He could buy a drone, you could learn how to fly it...it ain’t that hard...and once a week, you could do a flyover and post to a site and he could see it then.
