Does AI create anything truly innovative or new

I’m not a tech person, so bear with me. Does AI innovate or simply do a better job of compiling already existing data?

Existing data, ask it about something it hasn't been trained on and watch it fail miserably.

it's incapable of creating anything.
ETA: I mean new. It can create an excel document like a MF.

AI cannot create anything truly innovative if the goal requires human soul, intent, or emotion. But if the goal is finding a needle in a haystack of a trillion data points, like a new cure for a disease, AI is proving to be one of the most innovative discovery tools in human history.

It has created the most innovative tools we have ever seen. Previously almost all software sucked because it was designed to extract money, save costs, or even if free, collect data or increase adoption. AI gives you the ability to rapidly and economically deploy tools that do exactly what you want them to without any other agendas in play.
Oh ya, AI also enables search that prioritizes the user. Like above, not necessarily novel, but is something we haven’t seen in 20 years.

It created CAD a whole new personality

What happens, if after 100’s of new data centers are built, with promises made to local communities, AI finds a way to provide itself with a newer, smaller and cheaper power footprint?

AI is only as good as the person writing the prompts. If your prompts suck then it's going to produce sucky things

its not actual 'AI'... yet. So True innovation and creativity shouldnt be expected of it yet (but it did just answer one of the remaining millennium math problems so thats something)

It will someday, probably soon. However, it is a tool that humans can use to create novel things now. A pharma company recently used generative AI and machine learning to develop an anti-aging drug. It has only been tested on 42 patients with comorbidities so far, but it is interesting.

Its created a new way to deflate middle class jobs in corporate slavedom.

You mean deliberately stole someone else’s work and verified findings faster than they could?

Can you provide some examples of some of those tools?

You think AI companies are being run purely out of the goodness of the owners' hearts? Training data on the free models are clear of any and all biases of any kind?

1. Good tools. Can’t speak about business except generally like that high performing companies in highly competitive sectors like commodities almost all use custom built ERPs tethered to some 2008 sharepoint and dynamics license from back when you could buy software. AI makes it trivial to modernize while remaining lean and fully customized to your org’s priorities.
At home, same thing. Can run entire home with zero dependencies and zero agenda driven software like home assistant. Just straight mosquito and node or python.
The innovation is breaking free of the tool booths and spyware and having functions that are actually performant. I can ask “homie” my assistant to control any combination of anything in the house. If I want all lights in the house a slightly different shade of green, it’s done immediately. Big tech won’t do that for you. Home assistant won’t do that for you. Same when someone rings doorbell, I can connect immediately in pure 20ms UDP and have a conversation where you can actually talk over one another and still hear each other and even do that over WebKit or chromium that try to fight you to the death to force latency. Same thing if I want to watch a football game, I can get all my TVs streaming within about a half a second with no cabling and constantly nudging each other into perfect sync. Stuff like that is important to me but the market can’t support it and DRM alone kills the TV part unless you’re using mics or cameras or some external feedback or just get DRM free streams.
Going back to business, same thing. Big tech can’t support the unique challenges of every business, but AI can. Innovation doesn’t happen on CES stages, it happens in tiny iterations. You could argue most innovation is at least AI-adjacent today.
As for kindness of their hearts no, but the way we currently understand transformer LLMs, they pretty much have to follow directions. Companies can fight that with multiple layers behind their API, but they’d quickly fall behind the 1000x other APIs out there. Only Google is manipulating AI results at scale right now that I know of and if you look at benchmarks, they have gone from #1 to completely unranked over the exact 12 months that they tried to monetize their advertisers into Gemini.

Does AI create anything truly innovative or new
When I started playing with home assistant I considered it as just another ugly smart home dashboard.
When I built that to be displayed on a TV I realized HA is just the database and AI can access all that crap to present in a way nobody ever conceived.
It was my idea that evolved from there but AI have me enough encouragement along the way that it freed my mind to what was possible. I would not have gotten this far down the rabbit hole without it.
When I make a video for y'all on here you're going to be blown away. It's blowing my mind.
Makes my first display project look like absolute horse shite.
I'm just token-poor

AI is a tool. Nothing more, nothing less.
Someone can use AI to create something new or innovative.
