Has anyone used this app? I am curious to know how worried I should be that my nephew (8yr) is being allowed to use this app. From my understanding it was meant to be a game chat app but it seems to have morph into more.

Hi, I game and use the internet. I would not let my 8 year old read Tigerdroppings, which at least has some boundaries, much less engage in open discourse with internet chatroomers or game chatters, both of which can be some of the most toxic people on the internet.

Does he use groupme? It's a significantly better version of it with voice chat

Every app can be used for "more" these days. What servers you are on on discord make the difference. There are lots of good servers out there for whatever you're wanting to do.

Think of Discord as basically just like a web browser but for different chat groups, you can be part of some kid friendly servers or some really vile shite. You have to get access to his discord to figure out what he actually is viewing. He can also freely leave and join servers if he doesn’t want you to see what he is part of too.

Makes me wonder what MS has planned for when they complete their buy on Discord. Even for MS $10 Billion is a bit much to just let it continue on its own trajectory. They have to have a plan already in place.

They'll find some way to frick it up and we'll move on to something else until they buy that and frick it up too. Rinse and repeat.

I don't even know how to join a server on discord without being given a link to it.
What you should be asking yourself is where is he getting the links to these chats?

I use discord. I would not let my 8 year old use discord UNLESS they were in a discord server with a bunch of other 8 year olds. (Which can easily and freely be set up by the parents to be monitored.)

I would not let my 8 year old use google without supervision. If he's on discord, I would think the odds he is being groomed by some pedophile probably goes up significantly. He will read and see things, potentially, that an 8 year old should probably be shielded from for a bit longer IMO.

Of course my youngest will be 21 this year and one of my sons and I communicate on discord so I haven't had to deal with this directly. So maybe I'm not totally in touch here.
