Can I use one of my home boxes at my camper with an HD dish?
I've heard mixed reviews. Some say it won't work since AT&T buyout and some say it will.

I don't know why you couldn't. So long as you are able to get the dish pointed in the right direction...not hard with or without a bird-dog.. should be able to just use the internal signal strength meter. As long as the receiver is till registered to the system.
(Used to moonlight as a DirectTV tech...(Been about 10 years, but even AT&T couldn't screw it up any worse than it was.)

Thanks. I was told that the new boxes (small genie) has to be in proximity (same general location) to the main genie, and I'd need to buy a $100 addition to my package to add my camper. Sounded like a new att scheme, but hoped it would still work with my portable dish.

You can’t use the Genie mini.

You only mentioned the dish being an HD, didn't say the receiver was anything different. My comment was for the standard HD receiver. Suppose we both gotta be more specific.....

You can call Directv and tell them you need a model H24 HD Satellite Receiver. The H24 does not have a DVR. They will probably charge you $99 unless you're eligible for a free equipment upgrade.
You can also order one from Solid Signal for $99 but it will still be a leased receiver. I'm running a H24 at my camp. When you are out and about with your camper. If you are too far away from your local area you will not get the local channels and would need an antenna to get whatever locals are available.

Another directv question.
HD channels going in and out.
The cable news networks. In the morning, it’s fine, but it seems at certain times of the day it says it can’t get the HD feed and I have to switch it to standard.
Not a big deal with the news, but it’s doing it with NFL games now too.

You need to check your signal. It’s probably pretty weak. Any trees in the way?

There should be a signal meter built in to the receiver for each satellite. Have someone inside monitor the signal strength while you slowly move the dish to the highest signal. You should be able to get it lined up without a lot of effort.
A few degrees is all that's likely needed so long as you have clear line of sight to the birds.
The worst thig you can do is mess it up so that you need to call someone with a birddog to line it back up (which sounds like you might do anyhow).
How it used to work PRE-ATT&T, Depending on how long ago the dish was installed will determine if there is a service call cost incurred, if under 12 months then there was no customer cost, instead the call got charged to the installing tech, yes, even if the customer removed the dish or ran it over with a truck.

I've got a DTV question as well. Have a spare receiver at Camp in Mississippi that has worked great in the past. Recently it has dropped all of the local channel that it used to get such as WAFB WBRZ etc. I used the signal checker in the menu and it said the signal was real real weak but the rest of the channels still work great.
Is this a signal strength issue or a using a home based receiver at the camp.

You can go into your settings and check it. You need to be in the high 90’s. 0-100 scale.

either or both (most likely #1 provided you have not lost line of sight from the dish to the birds from foliage etc)
1 - the dish is misaligned and just needs to be adjusted for better signal strength.
2 - water infiltration to the coax (should be RG-6), check for sharp bends in the coax (dielectric potentially being crushed), damaged/abraded outer insulation, etc.

Dtv may have tightened up the spot beam for the local channels and you may be too far from Baton Rouge get those channels in MS. Dtv may have moved the local channels to the 119 satellite. Check your signal strength on 119. You may not get 119 if your using a Slimline 3 dish. Slimline 3 only gets the 99,101, &103 satellites. All nationwide HD & SD channels are on 99, 101, and 103.
The 110 satellite doesn't have much of anything on it and the 119 mostly has Spanish, foreign language channels and some local channels.
The 99,101, & 103 satellite are really the only sats that the signal strength matters unless your locals are on 119.

I feel so damn sorry for people who have some sort of irrational explanation for staying with ATT...streaming service instantly takes care of all the headaches of being tethered to cords and boxes

With Directv I get 250 channels at 3 different houses for $90 a month. $30 per house. Internet at 3 houses would cost me at least $150.
In rural states high speed internet isn't available in a lot of areas. How many news stories have you seen lately about kids that can't do school from home due to lack of high speed internet.
