In theory I suppose you could do it over a Wireless connection using mobile data but I can't fathom why you would want to.

Yes. I've done it for football games on campout.

The reason is my friend lives in an area where there is no internet.

He has unlimited data on his phone.

When we take road trips either my wife or I will turn on the hotspot so the other could stream a movie to the Chromecast in the van.

Yeah, but hotspots are limited.

His date is unlimited. So screen mirroring would be a solution

Use the phone as a hotspot for either a FireTV, roku, or apple TV.

How about an HDMI adapter from the phone?

that's a bizarre question. You don't cast with phone data. You receive via phone data.

No.... he has unlimited data on his phone.

That means he is not capped so long as he is viewing on his phone. The hot spot is capped at 5 gigs.

Do if he could screen cast, he would not have a problem

So maybe setup a Wi-Fi network for the phone and the cast device to connect to. Even though there's no internet, the internal network devices can still communicate with each other.

If your friend has a PC/laptop, and rooted/jailbroken phone, he could enable USB tethering on phone and share internet connection to a router/switch through the PC/laptop.

Tried that. The issue is that when you turn on the wifi on your phone, it turns off the phones data.

That doesn't make any sense. What kind of phone is this, iphone or Android?

That’s exactly how it works. If I’m ever on bad WiFi I have to turn it off to use data.

I think the best answer to this might be getting an HDMI cable for the phone. Not as convenient as casting but most casting is expected to be happening on the same WiFi network.

What kind of phone? There should be a setting to switch to mobile data when Wi-Fi has limited connectivity. Look in advanced Wi-Fi settings.

You have to turn on tethering on the unlimited data phone, connect your phone and the chromecast to the network.
