I'm not paying extra for crap that is completely outdated and for which i have ZERO DVDs laying around. why do they still offer this crap as an option on new cars? who's the target market?

what are the cool tech guys doing for their new cars for kids? Tablets and some type of mount to hold them in place behind the headrests?

are all tablets shitty these days? fire 10 maybe? its like $100 on amazon right now. ipads?

the kids have phones but the screens are so tiny..

is there anything that wont look super ghetto?

i just want to be able to run plex or some other streaming app on them so they can download tv series or movies from my server for trips.

what does the tech board do? how does this look like?

We flip our dvd screen down and literally strap an iPad to it

I know you can format your movies to whatever files the player will read and use a jump drive. I tried a couple of times but eventually gave up since my family was in the car waiting on me so we could go to Disney World.

They still make those?

I quite literally just threw away all of my DVDs/blurays like 2 weeks ago. I'd rather pay to rent/buy a movie again than to keep up with a collection.

Fire tablets that they can hold in their hands. Wireless headphones.

I connected a Chromecast to ours when we had a van but that was several years ago.

iPad and a headrest mount that we remove when we get out. Most of the time he just holds the iPad, and wireless headphones are a tremendous help.

Kids iPad has held up for over 6 years now. It’s been swimming a few times and covered in just about every sauce/food imaginable.

My SUV has flip down screens but it also has HDMI input and wifi so I plug in a fire TV stick and stream everything. Makes road trips a lot better

I’ve used old iPads and a kindle fire tablet. You can download some prime movies to them for free. It has like a 24 or 48 hour window to watch it once it is started. I think you can watch multiple times during that window as well. Worked great for a few drives to the beach and back home. Sometimes I would let them tether to my phones for WiFi and play games or stream shows. Our van has an empty slot for a DVD screen but when we bought it 7 years ago I googled for the model and it was already discontinued for a 3 year old vehicle. At least there is a plastic cover over the spot.

I had a Durango with screens in the headrests, and HDMI inputs and a Blu Ray player in the center console.

Kids used it about half a dozen times in the two years I had the car. They preferred texting and YouTube on their phones.

Our Odyssey doesn't have HDMI but it has RCA in the third row. Bought an RCA to HDMI converter and run an HDMI cord up to our seats and we run our phone/iPad thru the car TV. works great

Thanks everyone. you've confirmed what I thought that there's no magic solution here.

I would rather not pay for something that will likely get almost no use whatsoever.

I think I'll look into a cheap fire tablet and wireless headphones.

Amazon sells a $25 Mount that connects to the headrest rails and will hold a phone or tablet. Probably do something like that.

Does anyone intentionally not do iPads/etc. in the car for kids?

I'm not criticizing parenting here, I'm not a parent. I'm just curious if having something along these lines is considered an absolute must or if some people purposefully refuse to do it.

I've seen in car Plex installations. I would love to have one myself. The problem for me is I would want it to sync over wifi when at home. I don't have the know how to make a system that robust.

You know, we're so damn close to being able to have it all. And yet so far away. IF they could ever get 5G up, then it could put huge pressure on the wired internet companies. But then they would cry to their govt busybody and legislation would curtail 5g's progress much like it already has.

Our kids have phones and are in their teens, but for the longest, we just used a laptop turned around and it sat between our seats on the console. It was ghetto as frig tho. But better than the base system in the van. I think now they have replaceable headrests with video screens in them for about all the large vehicle models. Not sure on their quality though.

I ran HDMI to mine and connected an Apple TV

My car has WiFi so it’s easy to airplay to it from my iPad

Cost. For an iPad to make sense it would have to be a dock for the iPad so it could be removed for other use.
