I’m completely illiterate in terms of computers. Can anyone tell me what would be the best laptop(s) for podcast production? I started one a while back with no expectations of anyone listening and now that some are I feel a need to up the production value.
Everything I read says
Mac or a laptop geared toward gaming.
Thanks

No idea, just interested in what’s the podcast is about?

Well, how much is some?
If you are getting a lot of listeners daily, I'd say spend money on production, if it's a handful right now, I'd say worry about content. People will listen because of what you are saying, not how it sounds. I listen to some that are done from a cell phone.
But a gaming computer or anything like that, is basically a super spec's computer. Any brand can do it, just have to build it how you want it.

I would think buying a high quality microphone would impact the production value more than buying a new laptop. If you are thinking a new laptop will have a better mic than your current set up, it may but it still won't be nearly as good as a physical microphone you can plug in and position in front of you properly.

To an extent. A well produced podcast will help you grow a bigger listening base exponentially
I would first look into decent sound equipment (mic, amp, mixing board, etc) and then look in to the computer. As for the laptop, you'll mostly want processing power, so you shouldn't have to spend more than $700 on a laptop. I would say $500-600

I think i read somewhere that Marc Maron used free garage band on a mac mini with shure SM7 microphones, and his podcasts always sounded great to me.

This. Most important thing you can do is get (hardware wise) quality *recording* equipment. If only an audio podcast, this would be the microphone, and then any software you are using for post processing. (If including video, obviously need to invest in a quality camera but sounds like that is not the case).
Audio editing is somewhat resource intensive, so you don't want to use a POS, but as someone else mentioned, look for a deal on last year's gaming laptop. If any of those HPs are still around at Walmart - plug in your zip for under $500, that would be a good option. Fair warning, the brickseek count is rarely accurate, if it doesn't show at least 5 units in stock, I would not go out of your way to check... they've been on clearance since December, so rare to find them anymore.

Don't use HP. They aren't great at heavy duty video and audio editing.
I use an Asus G75. Macs are of course great as well.

This is why you don't post if you don't know a damn thing about what you're talking about

Sorry, are you referring to my post?
HP would probably not be my first choice for producing highly custom videos or an EDM album with tons of splicing, but for a podcast, we're not taking about tons of concurrent processes. That computer is an example of a $1k+ machine for less than $500... It's also an example of a gaming laptop that has been put on clearance that would more than sufficiently handle the use case provided. If there's a comparable Acer, Asus, insert your brand of preference, it really doesn't matter too much.
Also, would note that nearly every "best laptop for podcasting" list includes one or more HP laptops...

It's a great machine... But much more expensive than is needed strictly for podcasting.

I was talking to the person I replied to. It was a dumb statement because HP has machines with the exact same specs as the computer he has
HP makes some fine machines

At first but over 10 years maybe not

Any MacBook for the past 3-4 years is the best as the majority use GarageBand (free) or Logic Pro (definitely not free) and the ecosystem is incredibly mature.

History. Well lesser taught history. Pretty boring. It’s not very good. And I’m surprised that people are listening. That being said, I enjoy doing it.

I have a decent mic and have soundproofed a closet. And the sound is good. But the software I’m using isn’t great.

If you want to get a new machine, get one with the 8th gen i5/i7 processor. They're a huge step up from previous generations and will eat throw any compression you throw at it
