5G technology is truly needed in order to make the next leap with fully autonomous vehicles.
Tesla has shown that OTA updates are not only easy, but soon to be expected in all technology.

Literally half the country would not want a self driving car even if cheaper than a regular car.

Car ownership will become a thing of the past once full implementation of autonomous vehicles takes over the marketplace

bullshite. Car Enthusiasts are everywhere. No one wants to be passenger.
Posted on 4/4/19 at 7:06 am to gobuxgo5
A vast majority of the drivers see driving as nothing more than a chore.

Ride sharing makes economic sense in the densely populated city centers where there's a high volume of people coming and going in a relatively small area. The suburbs in many metro areas don't have the population or route density to make a complete switch to car sharing for everyone realistic.

Literally half the country is of below median intelligence, too.

Disagree again.
Maybe for commuting to and from work will be a large buyer of self driving but MUCH of the country still has fun cars for Mudding, Luxury Sports Cars they enjoying "shifting" gears in. People like taking jeeps to the lake for fishing and driving old trucks.
Then you'll have major privacy concerns as technology advances where everywhere you go is tracked. Cheated on spouse? Tracked. It'll be the Big Brother GPS system for you. Many will love the older cars.
I can just see the classic car shows instantly going out of business because of the 63 year old baw torching his hot rod after he experiences a "self driving car"
Ya'll crazy.

Disagree again.

quote:Tracking isn't exclusive to autonomous cars. Our phones already track everywhere we go. OnStar/etc are already tracking a large fraction of vehicles currently on the road. Some cities are installing car tracking cameras. Don't act like autonomous cars will be some huge privacy issue. Actually, they could be better for privacy. Use a ride-hailing app with an anonymous account to summon an autonomous car and pay with bitcoin. It's not your car so nobody will know it's you inside, license plate cams won't link the car to you, and there's no driver to recognize you. Wear a fricking paper bag on your head when you get out to defeat facial recognition cams if you're that paranoid.

quote:Not a single person is saying that self driving cars will make any of the "fun" things we do with cars any less fun. It's an absolutely absurd thought to have, actually. Some people like driving, they will drive. Hell, probably most of us like driving on at least some occasions, so we will drive on those occasions. Manually driven cars are not going to be illegal. What's with the all-or-nothing view when deciding when/if self-driving cars can be deemed "successful" or "the norm" or whatever? I think most would say computers have pretty well "taken over" when it comes to writing (and everything else), but there are still motherfrickers out there still blasting away on typewriters. So what?

I can't wait for self driving cars. Can't wait to be able.to.hop.in the back and accomplish something instead of driving. The other great thing is you can put the car to work for you and make money for you when you are at work or home.

Meh. Lots of folks in the NE corridor do. Traffic and commuting are nightmares for them.

Assuming that the technology happens, which is overstated by the propellerheads at the moment, on what planet will there be roads that allow completely anonymous ride share services with anonymous riders where the cars won't track who is riding in them?

The technology for 100% autonomous cars on the roads exists. The hard part is the transition period where human drivers share the roads with computer drivers.

Privacy is a crucial aspect of freedom, so I'd say as long as we live in a free country there will exist anonymous ways to do just about anything. If there is demand in the market, that is, and I think there will be.

I think the suburbs pose a major hurdle to car ownership going away completely. However, if the half of the country that lives in the cities stop buying cars and ride sharing fleets start buying them instead, that's going to completely alter the economics of car buying. You'll probably see individual owner car choices decline and prices rise.

Litigation nightmares will have to be worked our first.
Not just the what if's of an autonomus-vs-nonautonomus but the logistics of two autonomi (?) piling up. Fender benders will hurt but death costs will be astronomical. And the first murder by autonomous vehicle is just around the corner, bad wive, badda-bing collect and retire.

People are dying every day on the road right now. Autonomous cars don’t need to achieve perfection and zero injuries, they just need to beat the low bar set by human drivers already.

I have no interest. Maybe I'll let one cart me around when I'm 80 if I live that long
