re: ATT Fiber

I've been debating switching to ATT Fiber. They just ran it and made available in my neighborhood. However, they are having all kinds of issues with their database showing availability. I've called 3x now and tend to get different answers each time on what is available.
I'll be moving within the year and want to make sure it's available at the new address before I switch. But each time I call, I get different availabilties for each address. Some say it's available at both, some say only one and/or reduced at the other, some say neither. I get told it's not available when my neighbor 50' away has had it for months.

I ran into this a few weeks ago for a customer with a recent installation. She was paying for the gig but only getting 180mbps download speeds that were really choppy on speedtest.net. She told me she recently switched from Cox so I released her ip settings from the command prompt and let the computer re-establish the connection. On the next speed test we got 940mbps download speeds. Try the simple things first ;-).
Unfortunately, this did not work

No way that was the fix. Doing any ipconfig /release then /renew only refreshes a DHCP lease. If for some bizarre reason she was still on the Cox DHCP lease she would be routing to a gateway that no longer exists and would get nowhere.
Not giving you a hard time but just a clarification of the process.

I understand the process but that was all that was done on her pc. I literally did nothing else. If I got lucky then so be it. At the end of the day her problem was fixed and she was happy, that's all that matters ;-).

had this problem today testing with speedtest-cli on my headless server...jumped onto att.com/speedtest (per the advice of the chat tech) on my laptop and got 860+ up and down consistently. I didn't believe it so I jumped into a VM on the server that was giving me low numbers and got high results from att.com/speedtest...tested the same VM on speedtest.net and sub 400-600 again.
That's not possible. At&t would never lie to or treat their victims like that.

jumped onto att.com/speedtest

I never use our site when doing speed test for customers. Whether it is accurate or not I just use speedtest.net so that it doesn't appear to be biased lol.

I've had cable internet since 1999, but I am by NO means brand loyal. COX has just been the only option.

When will it get to Central?

Any idea when ATT Fiber will be rolling out in other areas of Watson? Especially around the subdivision near Amite Church Rd? TIA.

It's getting close to being ready for the bulkheads (or fiber serving terminals) to be placed. From there, it'll be turned on in pretty short order.

So does anyone know if there are data caps with AT&T fiber?

I have the 1Gbps (1000mbps) plan and I know there is not a data cap.
I think on the slower speeds there is a data cap.

I only have Roku TVs.
That's the only way we watch shows now is through streaming so I can not have data caps.

How would I find out when fiber would be available in my neighborhood besides the interactive map that tells me nothing? I'm not in the BR area.

quote:To the best of my knowledge, there's no definitive place to get a listing of which neighborhoods are next in line. All the interactive map is good for is telling you the major metropolitan areas where fiber is being rolled out (i.e., Baton Rouge). From there, ATT's strategy is to get the service into places where the cost-per-home is the cheapest. So, in greater BTR for example, major subdivisions and apartment complexes get higher priority.

There ARE a few things you can look for to determine if (1) a neighborhood is wired for fiber or (2) will be coming online shortly. First, you can look for the presence of fiber markers in/around the neighborhood:

If it's an older neighborhood (with ATT copper facilities in place), you can look for the existence of CFSTs. I couldn't find a readily-available photo of these online, but they are typically two tan, square boxes--one about 3.5' tall and one about 2' tall--that are usually side-by-side. They usually hang out in utility servitudes, and they may be adjacent to cable boxes, ATT copper facilities, and even power boxes. In Easterly Lakes subdivision (north of Watson), they are supposed to be in the rear utility servitudes, but, in actuality, they are located in the rear of various resident's fenced backyards. If you live in a neighborhood with lots of fences, be sure to check around all of those general areas.
If it's a newer neighborhood, you can also look for a true fiber serving terminal--something that looks like this:

These are principally used in neighborhoods which were never wired with copper.
Finally, if it's a neighborhood using OptiTap technology, you will either see the Fiber Tap Multiport Terminal Closures up on poles or, in most cases, they will be underground.

Obviously, you won't be able to see them underground, but you can look for the boxes they are in. The boxes have a concrete lid that's about 2'x3' with the ATT logo clearly visible. Many times they will be near the fiber markers noted above.
One more thing--the conduit we use to run fiber into neighborhoods (or, more specifically, from any/all of our facilities described above to near our customers' homes) is bright orange. If you see a spool of bright orange conduit being placed, there's a pretty good chance that area will be active for fiber in fairly short order. We also have handholes placed near homes where fiber is available. These look like typical water meter lids, but they are a shade of green and, again, they have the ATT logo. Also, if you look inside, you should see the orange conduit mentioned above and the occasional, highly-motivated water moccasin.

I live outside of natchitoches and they laid fiber about a year ago but they dont offer it yet. Does it usually take a while. The town in Marthaville.

How far down are neighborhoods that don't currently have any ATT lines run. I'm on Tigerbend and we have no ATT services but I'm itching to cut loose from Cox. Years away?
