AT&T's HBO Max won't count against data caps. Other streaming services will.

According to an AT&T executive familiar with the matter, HBO Max is using AT&T’s “sponsored data” system, which technically allows any company to pay to excuse its services from data caps. But since AT&T owns HBO Max, it’s just paying itself: the data fee shows up on the HBO Max books as an expense and on the AT&T Mobility books as revenue. For AT&T as a whole, it zeroes out. Compare that to a competitor like Netflix, which could theoretically pay AT&T for sponsored data, but it would be a pure cost.
Looks like the poli board consensus was wrong

Well maybe if you posted this on the political board...

Anyone with half a brain knew this would happen.
This is why content providers should not also be allowed to own the infrastructure for transmitting the content.

Truthfully, this is what the net neutrality laws would have prevented. This really only encourages vertical integration of mega companies. The marriage of your ISP and content providers is something that we should definitely watch going forward. I am not sure that it is a good idea. ISPs would love in the future to force to have to subscribe to multiple ISP services so that you can access their different content.

people predicted this. you're upset that a telecom company is creating a way to make certain data less expensive?

Priority of traffic was always going to happen with no NN

Data is fricking data

sure but, at the heart of this issue, is data caps. those exist regardless of NN
this policy basically gives you (potentially) a larger cap for free, and doesn't affect those who don't take advantage

Not counting certain data because its your content driven data proves data caps are pointless.

It was already happening but in a way that was obfuscated from non-technical regulators.
They used P2P connectivity and edge hosting agreements to get around it. Basically traffic to Netflix content was/is faster than their competitors.
